Red Sox ditch Dodgers’ World Series hero
Walker Buehler, who recorded the final out in the Dodgers’ 2023 championship, never regained his form after Tommy John surgery.

The Boston Red Sox have released Walker Buehler, who had signed a one-year, $21.05 million deal in last offseason. The 31-year-old right-hander lost his spot in the rotation after posting a 5.40 ERA, a 5.83 FIP, and a 4.4 BB/9 over 110 innings in 22 starts.

Buehler’s only relief appearance came last Sunday against the New York Yankees, when he allowed two earned runs, two hits, and a home run over 2 1/3 innings in a loss.
Buehler injury comeback hasn’t gone as planned
Since returning from Tommy John surgery in May 2024, Buehler has not matched the dominant form that helped the Los Angeles Dodgers capture their second World Series in five years. He famously recorded the final out to seal that championship.
Red Sox turn to top prospect
With Buehler gone, Boston has called up left-handed pitching prospect Payton Tolle, who will make his MLB debut against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 22-year-old is the Red Sox’s No. 2 prospect and ranks 28th overall in MLB. Tolle has a 3.44 ERA with 133 strikeouts in 91 2/3 innings over 18 starts across three minor league levels in 2025.
