There can be little doubt that 2023 World Baseball Classic MVP Shohei Ohtani has become one of Major League Baseball’s most eye-catching attractions in recent years. And now there’s another statistic to prove it.

Ohtani breaks another MLB record

Having become the first player in the modern era to qualify for both the hitting and pitching leaderboards in the same season in 2022, the Los Angeles Angels star has made yet more history in 2023, once again proving that few do baseball quite like he does.

How high did Ohtani strike the ball against the Brewers?

In his team’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers, the Japanese set a new record for the ‘highest’ home run since Statcast tracking technology was first introduced into MLB in 2015, allowing for the collection and analysis of data of almost anything you can imagine in each match.

In the third inning, Ohtani didn’t quite hit Colin Rea’s pitch into outer space but came as close as anyone has ever done, with his strike connecting at a launch angle of 39 degrees and eventually reaching 162 feet above the field.

“Something new every day” with Ohtani

“I kept waiting for it to hit somewhere up on the scoreboard. Then I saw the metrics. He’s special, and we see something new each day with him,” said Angels manager Phil Nevin.

The home run was Ohtani’s seven of the season so far, which leaves him on 18 RBIs. The Angels defeated the Brewers 3-0 and remain in third spot in American League West.
