Can the Warriors rescind Gary Payton II’s trade if he is injured?
Everything seemed to be going smoothly until it wasn’t. With the trade now in the balance, some are wondering whether or not the Warriors will back out on the move?
It was meant to be a happy homecoming for the former Warriors star who was on the verge of returning to the Bay. That move now seems to be in jeopardy, but the team itself appears to be holding firm, which leaves to wonder how it will all pan out.
Warriors set to move forward with Gary Payton II
If you missed it, Gary Payton II unexpectedly failed his physical, which in turn has led to the trade that sent him from the Portland Trail Blazers to the Golden State Warriors is now at risk of falling through. What’s more, is that James Wiseman was also meant to be on his way to the Detroit Pistons as part of the deal. Should things fall apart, he’d have to return to the Warriors. According to reports, the Warriors have a deadline of Saturday to make a decision, however, there are indications that they will continue with the move despite the fact that Payton failed his physical.
“The Warriors remain extremely interested in a reunion with GP2, who was a critical member of the roster that last June won the 2022 NBA Finals,” read the report. “Which brings us to a couple salient factors. One, the Warriors still could – and likely would – choose to waive the failed physical and retain Payton’s rights, even if he is sidelined indefinitely, multiple league sources told NBC Sports Bay Area. ...One source, familiar with the Warriors’ desire have GP2 back on the roster, seemed ‘sure’ they would be willing to consider that option – despite being surprised by the failed physical. Golden State has up to 72 hours to accept the trade or rescind it.”
Is Gary Payton II worth it?
By all accounts yes. Truth be told, projections show Payton would give the Warriors a key boost in production, especially where the post season is concerned, something that will almost certainly have an effect on their decision. Add to that, the fact that Payton is also under contract next season as well and you’ve got a situation where it begins to make sense for the Warriors. Ultimately, this situation is set to become very intriguing. So, as we always say, watch this space.
