Cavs collapse again as Knicks surge to 2–0 series lead

Still reeling from a painful Game 1 collapse, the Cavs fall again in Game 2 to a clearly superior Knicks team and look shaken.

The biggest question heading into Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals was whether the Cleveland Cavaliers would get another opportunity like the one they let slip away. Blowing a 22-point lead with seven minutes remaining in Game 1 still stung, and there were plenty of fingers pointed after the collapse.

On one hand, James Harden once again found himself under scrutiny. Despite 17 playoff appearances in 17 professional seasons, he carries the reputation of falling short when it matters most. But head coach Kenny Atkinson also faced heavy criticism. He played his most experienced player for more than 42 minutes, including the entire fourth quarter and overtime, failed to call timeouts during New York’s comeback, and never found answers for the mismatches involving Harden, a constant liability for both the player and the team.

Because of that, and the emotional blow of losing a game they had already won, belief in Cleveland began to fade. The Cavs had already gone to seven games in the first round against the Toronto Raptors and another seven in the semifinals versus the Detroit Pistons. Fatigue was evident. Execution was slipping. And as the rounds progressed, so did the level of competition.

Knicks take control of series

The New York Knicks, meanwhile, had a clear plan: attack relentlessly. If that meant targeting Harden for 48 minutes, or even 53, as in Game 1, they were going to do it. That made him the perfect target for Jalen Brunson, whose ball-handling and control, combined with his counterpart’s defensive shortcomings, created a glaring weakness in Cleveland’s structure. There was still time to respond. Or maybe not.

In the end, with Madison Square Garden once again at the center of the basketball world, the expected outcome arrived. The Knicks won 109–93, this time without overtime or wild swings, and took a 2–0 lead in the series. They led by as many as 19, and Cleveland’s resistance peaked at cutting the deficit to eight (88–80) with seven minutes left. It wasn’t nearly enough.

At times, the Cavaliers look like a team that wants to compete but can’t, and at others, like a team that neither wants nor can. They appear exhausted, weighed down by the emotional toll of Game 1, a loss they may not recover from anytime soon.

Harden, for what it’s worth, finished with 18 points, six rebounds, and two assists, shooting 6-of-15 from the field, 3-of-7 from three, and a perfect 3-of-3 from the free-throw line. His lone historical note came via two steals that moved him past Kobe Bryant on the all-time playoff steals list, hardly a defining contribution on a night like this.

For the Knicks, it was a complete performance. Brunson led with 19 points and 14 assists, all five starters scored in double figures, Josh Hart was everywhere with 26 points, and Karl-Anthony Towns dominated inside with 18 points and 13 rebounds. New York shot nearly 52% from the field and attempted just 14 free throws compared to Cleveland’s 32, removing yet another excuse for the visitors.

Donovan Mitchell was the lone bright spot for Cleveland, finishing with 26 points. Still, he looked isolated, whether by circumstance or choice, with five personal fouls, just one assist, and a -8 plus-minus while on the floor.

It may not matter anyway. Right now, Cleveland looks like a team out of place. Tired, uninspired, and searching for answers that may not come. Even with the series shifting to Ohio, a turnaround seems unlikely. What remains may simply be the memory of that Game 1 collapse, the moment everything changed.
