Dallas Mavericks fans haven’t even had time to process the news that Luka Doncic is no longer a part of the team before the Mavs had to start their first Luka-less game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The organization continues to get criticism for the trade, which saw Doncic, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris head to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a first-round draft pick in 2029. The trade is being referred to as the most shocking in NBA history as Doncic is one of the best players in the league, while AD is getting older every day.

Mavs general manager Nico Harrison has cited Doncic’s fitness and injuries as part of the reason for the unexpected trade, but AD’s had his fair share of injuries as well. As it stands, the Mavs are now without Luka, and AD won’t make his debut at least for a few more games, as he’s currently still recovering from an abdominal injury.

Cavs put up numbers on Luka-less Mavs

The Mavs have a challenge against the Cleveland Cavaliers in their first game post Doncic, and so far, it’s not going well. In the first half alone, the Cavaliers put up 91 points against the Mavs - a franchise record for points in a half. In turn, the Mavericks were only able to put up 46 on the Cavaliers.

The Cavaliers were up 31 points at the end of the first quarter, and extended the lead even further by the end of the second. They were shooting 67% from the floor and 74% from the three-point range.

Fresh off this trade news and with injuries throughout the team, it’s no surprise the Mavs are struggling against the No. 1 team in the Eastern Conference. And it’s not getting much better for the Mavs in the second half either.

The NBA record for halftime points

The Cavaliers fall short of the NBA record for highest number of points scored by a team in the first half of a game, as that number is 107 and belongs to the Phoenix Suns.

The Suns set the record, which remains unbroken until today, on November 10, 1990 in a game against the Denver Nuggets. The Suns scored 50 points in the first quarter alone, and 57 in the second. The game ended with the Suns winning 173-143.
