Curry ‘challenges’ Ionescu to a three-point contest: “I would pay to see it”

Sabrina Ionescu (25 years old and 1.80 m) starred in one of the most incredible feats in American basketball. The New York Liberty point guard made 37 of 40 possible points on 25 of 27 shooting in the WNBA All-Star 3-point contest. No one in history, neither men nor women, had reached that level.

Tyrese Haliburton and Stephen Curry previously held the record for the highest points achieved during the NBA All-Star Weekend with 31 points each, but that record was surpassed by a New York Liberty player who scored six more points. Stephen Curry expressed his amazement on Twitter, calling it “ridiculous.”

It wasn’t the only time the Golden State Warriors point guard praised Ionescu: “She went crazy,” he said in an interview with ESPN. “We have to figure this out: who is the best three-point shooter in the competition” Curry then challenged the Californian, to the delight of LeBron James: “I’d pay to see it.”

It is widely accepted that the four-time NBA champion is the greatest shooter of all time. With a record-breaking 3,390 three-point shots made in the North American League, there is little room for debate. Furthermore, he holds four out of the top five records for threes fired in a single season, a historic achievement.

Without James Harden, he would have occupied the top four positions for most three-point shots made in a season if the Sixers point guard didn’t have his impressive 378 shots in the 2018-19 season, the second-best record in history. Curry holds the first position with 402 shots made in the 2015-16 season. He also made 354 three-point shots in the 2018-19 season, securing the third position, 337 in the 2020-21 season, and 324 in the 2016-17 season for the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
