The Golden State Warriors opened the season in fashion with a ring ceremony and a win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tip Off Tuesday. Steph Curry stole the show with 33 points in the 123-109 victory.
Champs get their rings
On a night which began with final championship festivities, the Warriors sent their fans home celebrating the opening win of their title defense season. Golden State was presented their championship rings, and hung the banner from the rafters, but then got down to business once the new season tipped off.
Both teams started the first quarter understandably slow in the opening night of the new season. Golden State got had trouble hanging on to the ball, turning the ball over six times, while the Lakers went just 1/10 from downtown in the opening 12 minutes. Three point shooting was a liability for the Lakers last year, and started off the campaign with similar problems.
Lakers shooting struggles carry over
Anthony Davis was one of the few scoring options to start the game, getting 10 points in the opening quarter, but the Warriors led 25-22 going into the second.
Stephen Curry took over in the second quarter, scoring eight straight points to extend the Warriors lead to 14 point but LeBron James would answer. James had a slow start, but warmed up as the game went on and his 14 first half points helped the LA trim that lead down to 59-52 going into half.
It looked like the same old story as last year for the Lakers in the third quarter. They were guilty of just shutting off in games during their tumultuous 2021/22 campaign, and they did the same coming out of the halftime break in San Francisco.
Golden State pulls away in third quarter
Thompson got going early out of the halftime break with nine quick points. The Warriors then went on a 25-4 towards the end of the quarter to stretch the lead to 27 points. There was a five minute stretch in which LeBron James and the Lakers went scoreless as the Warriors landed the early knock out blow.
The Lakers tried to mount a comeback, going on a 13-2 run to start the fourth quarter, but the damage was done and the Warriors cruised to an easy win at the Chase Center.
It was a relatively smooth offseason for the Warriors, who didn’t see much shifting in the roster. Everything up until the final week of preseason was uneventful but the Draymond Green punch made it a bumpy start to the season. On Tuesday the Warriors could finally get back to what they do best, winning basketball games.
Steph Curry ended the game with 33 points on 10-22 shooting, while Andrew Wiggins pitched in 20.
LeBron James led the Lakers with 31 points and 14 rebounds as Anthony Davis contributed 27 points, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Warriors within striking distance in the second half.

We love to talk about the Warriors offense, but the defense has been huge when Golden State has success. They held the Lakers to 5 minutes of scoreless basketball in the third quarter.
There is no secret Green and Poole were involved in one of the nastiest dust ups we have seen in an NBA practice, but they showed they can coexist on the same court on Tuesday.
The banner is in the rafters and the quest befins to add another one to the Chase Center roof.
After a breakout year last season, it's Jordan Poole's time to shine this year. He had 12 points off the bench in the opener.
