Though the focus was largely only Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, the Celtics guard proved to be an indispensable part of the team that emerged as NBA champions in 2024. To that end, he’s been rewarded with a lucrative extension.

Derrick White & Celtics agree to huge extension

According to reports, Boston Celtics guard Derrick White has agreed to a four-year, $125.9 million contract extension that will keep him tied to the champions for the foreseeable future. To be clear, the extension includes a player option for the fourth season, that gives White the leeway to opt-out and capitalize on his value with another contract in his mid-30 - he will celebrate his 30th birthday on Tuesday.

White is of course the player who arrived at the trade deadline during the 2022 season, and has since gone on to establish himself as one of the key figures in the Celtics’ roster, one who was - as mentioned before - an integral part of the team that won its 17th NBA title earlier this month. Indeed, fans have witnessed the former Colorado stand-out develop into one of the most dangerous players from beyond the arc in the league during the last few seasons, something that the Celtics have definitely benefitted from.

If you didn’t know, White has been named second-team All-Defense in each of the last two seasons, while averaging 15.2 points, 5.2 assists, and 4.2 rebounds on 39.6% shooting from three point range last year. On top of that, he also led the NBA in blocks among guards with 87 total. As for the Celtics and what this means, the team has now secured the services of one of the key players on the roster, following Jayson Tatum’s supermax extension. Of course, Tatum’s deal was largely a formality, while White’s was somewhat more complicated given the obstacles posed by the new CBA. Nonetheless, a deal was done and here we are with the Boston Celtics ready to continue as they were i.e., the best team in the league.
