Caitlin Clark has been named as TIME magazine’s Athlete of the Year for 2024, joining the United States Women’s National Team (soccer) and Olympic gymnast Simone Biles as female winners of the prize since it was established in 2019. LeBron James, Aaron Judge and Lionel Messi have also scooped the award in the last five years.

Clark had a huge impact on the popularity of women’s basketball even before joining WNBA team the Indiana Fever at the start of the 2024 season. The 22-year-old had already established herself as a superstar as one of the greatest collegiate players of all time with the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Caitlin Clark’s WNBA accolades and records in 2024

After a relatively slow start to her WNBA career, Clark soon roared into top form with the Fever. The point guard was named the league’s Rookie of the Year and to the All-WNBA first team, becoming the first rookie selected in 16 years.

Records tumbled on a seemingly weekly basis, including most assists in a single season, most points by a point guard in a season, most double-doubles by a rookie guard in a season, most points by a rookie in WNBA history…you get the idea.

Despite her success and profile, Clark earned a modest base salary of $76,535 during her rookie year with the Fever, although her on-court earnings are thought to have risen to approximately $100,000 as a result of various bonuses.

However, the Iowa native has broken into the top 10 of highest-earning female athletes in the world thanks to numerous endorsements, including from Nike, Wilson and Gatorade.

According to Sportico, Clark is expected to have made $11.1 million by the time the year comes to an end, putting her 10th on a list headed by tennis star Coco Gauff ($30.4 million).
