Is Luka Doncic playing vs Thunder? Latest injury update and return timeline
Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic is still out as the team gets ready to take on the Oklahoma City Thunder in Round 2 of the NBA Playoffs.

The Los Angeles Lakers are back in the second round of the NBA Playoffs, but they may once again have to face a major test without their biggest star. As they prepare to take on the Oklahoma City Thunder, the status of Luka Doncic remains one of the biggest questions of the series.
The Lakers advanced despite his absence, but the challenge now gets significantly tougher against a Thunder team that swept the Phoenix Suns in the first round and enters the matchup well-rested.
The Thunder’s combination of pace, perimeter shooting, and defensive pressure makes them one of the most difficult matchups in the postseason, and potentially a series-deciding factor if Los Angeles cannot generate consistent half-court offense. That puts even more focus on whether Doncic can return, and when.
Luka Doncic injury update
Doncic is currently recovering from a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, an injury that has lingered for much of the 2025–26 season.
He was recently seen getting shots up at practice ahead of Game 1, a positive sign in his recovery process. However, Lakers head coach JJ Redick offered little optimism when asked about his availability, saying there is “no update” regarding a return.

That response suggests that while Doncic has resumed light on-court work, he has not yet progressed to full-speed basketball activities such as sprinting or five-on-five play, key benchmarks for game readiness.
When could Luka Doncic return?
Based on typical recovery timelines for a Grade 2 hamstring strain, Doncic is not expected to play early in the series. Medical estimates generally place recovery in the 4-to-8 week range, depending on severity and rehab progress. With the injury occurring on April 2, Doncic is just over a month into recovery.
That timeline points to a potential return around Game 4 at the earliest, assuming no setbacks and continued progress in rehab. Even that scenario remains uncertain.

Hamstring injuries are notoriously tricky, especially for players who rely on explosiveness and change of direction. The Lakers are expected to take a cautious approach to avoid re-aggravation, which could sideline Doncic for an even longer period.
While Doncic’s presence at practice is encouraging, it does not necessarily indicate an imminent return. Getting shots up is often one of the earliest steps in a player’s recovery, well before they are cleared for full-contact action. The lack of a firm update from Redick reinforces the idea that Doncic is still in the early stages of ramping back up.
For now, the expectation remains that he will miss at least the first few games of the series.
What Luka’s absence means for the Lakers
Without Doncic, the Lakers will need to continue relying on a committee approach offensively while trying to slow down one of the league’s most dynamic teams. If they can remain competitive and extend the series, a mid-series return from Doncic could dramatically shift the balance.
But if Oklahoma City takes early control, Los Angeles may be forced to weigh the risk of bringing him back too soon against the long-term outlook. For now, it seems Doncic is progressing, but his return is not imminent.
