Update:

The blockbuster move that brought Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers may have looked like a dream on paper, but according to Lakers owner Jeanie Buss, the reality was far more complicated.

“Never seen a player come to the Lakers and be as sad as he was”

In a recent interview, Buss offered a revealing look at Doncic’s mindset when he first arrived in Los Angeles, and it sharply contrasts with the typical superstar narrative surrounding the franchise.

“In my experience welcoming players to the Lakers organization, I often hear, ‘this is my dream,’” Buss explained, referencing the legacy of icons like Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

But Doncic, she said, was different.

“Luka didn’t come into the Lakers like that. He was trying to figure out why this was happening,” Buss said.

The comment sheds new light on one of the most shocking trades in recent NBA history, which saw Doncic leave the Dallas Mavericks, the only NBA home he had known, for Los Angeles in 2025. According to Buss, the emotional weight of that move was immediately visible.

“You could see he left his heart in Dallas, and it was going to take him time,” she said.

That aligns with Doncic’s own words following the trade, when he admitted he expected to spend his career in Dallas and “wanted so badly” to win a championship there. Buss went even further, offering a metaphor that quickly caught attention online.

“It’s kind of like if your boyfriend breaks up with you,” she said. “It’s okay to go out and get a new dress and try to make him regret he ever did that.”

The analogy shows just how personal, and painful, the transition was for Doncic, despite landing with one of the NBA’s most storied franchises. It also reinforces something Buss has said previously, that Doncic’s arrival was unlike any she had seen.

“I’ve never had a player come to the Lakers and be as sad as he was,” she said in an earlier interview, noting the trade came as a complete surprise to the superstar guard.

Over time, however, that initial shock has evolved. Doncic has since embraced his role in Los Angeles, even signing a long-term extension and openly committing to chasing championships with the franchise.

Still, Buss’ latest comments offer a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into the human side behind the transactions and headlines. Because while the Lakers may have landed one of the NBA’s brightest stars, the story behind it wasn’t about a dream fulfilled. It was about a player learning to let go of one home before fully embracing another.
