Against the odds, the Los Angeles Lakers managed to come through their first test of the postseason. The narrative grew complicated after the opening games, but ultimately tilted in their favor. The Houston Rockets have been eliminated, and the purple and gold move on with a story that isn’t finished yet.

Luka Doncic wasn’t needed in this first round, but he likely will be for what comes next: the Oklahoma City Thunder.

After sweeping the Phoenix Suns, the defending NBA champions are now preparing to face the Lakers. Los Angeles arrives without their top scorer, but with renewed confidence that fuels bigger ambitions.

The challenge won’t be easy, but it’s not impossible. The Lakers say they’re ready for OKC. But is Luka?

When will Luka Doncic return?

The latest updates are optimistic, but not definitive. After leaving the United States to continue treatment in Europe, Doncic has rejoined the team to complete his recovery process. However, according to multiple NBA reports and insiders, his return is expected sometime in the middle of the series.

It’s worth noting that he has not resumed full team practices and is still limited to individual workouts. All signs point to the guard missing the start of the series against OKC, with a possible return for Games 3 or 4 in a best-case scenario.

A chance at redemption

It’s also worth remembering that it was against the Thunder that the “Wonder Boy” suffered the injury that has kept him sidelined, and ultimately cost him the chance to fully contend for the MVP award due to missed games. In that sense, a return against OKC, and a potential upset, would create a compelling narrative, one capable of capturing attention across the league.

With or without Luka, the Lakers remain the Lakers. The franchise is bigger than any one player, regardless of the name on the jersey. Doncic changes the game in many ways, but Los Angeles knows that winning will depend on collective strength, not just individual brilliance. The series ahead promises to be a battle.
