Update:

The New York Knicks are back at Madison Square Garden tonight for a pivotal Game 4 of the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs. And for fans heading into Manhattan, the experience outside the arena will be the first hurdle of the night.

No Trump, same lockdown: What to know before Knicks Game 4 at MSG

New York City officials have confirmed that an extensive security perimeter will once again surround Madison Square Garden, mirroring the setup from Game 3. And while President Donald Trump is no longer expected to attend, the heightened restrictions that shaped Monday night’s chaotic scene are not going anywhere.

That means fans should prepare for a tightly controlled environment, limited access points, and significantly altered movement around one of the busiest sections of the city.

The NYPD’s plan includes a “frozen zone” stretching from West 29th Street to West 35th Street between Sixth and Eighth Avenues. Within that perimeter, access will be restricted to a narrow group of people that includes ticket holders, local residents, employees, and those with specific business in the area. Everyone else is being urged to avoid the zone entirely.

Seventh Avenue, typically a central artery for foot traffic and pregame energy, will be shut down to both vehicles and pedestrians starting at 4 p.m., hours before tipoff. The goal, officials say, is to manage crowd flow and prevent the congestion that overwhelmed the area earlier in the week.

For fans who experienced Game 3, the changes will feel both familiar and possibly frustrating. Long lines, TSA-style screenings, and limited entry points created delays and confusion, even for players and team personnel. Those conditions are expected to persist.

At the same time, the city is trying to channel the Knicks’ surging popularity into more controlled environments. A ticketed watch party will once again take place just outside Madison Square Garden, though it will come with strict rules. Entry will be limited to a single access point at West 33rd Street and Sixth Avenue, all attendees will be screened, and reentry will not be allowed under any circumstances. That means once you’re in, you’re in.

Additional watch party locations across the city are also expected to draw large crowds, continuing what has become one of the defining elements of this Knicks playoff run. From Bryant Park to neighborhood bars, the team’s success has sparked a level of citywide engagement not seen in decades, turning each game into a shared civic event.

Still, not everyone is happy with how the celebrations are being handled. Madison Square Garden Sports Corp. pushed back against the restrictions in a sharply worded statement, arguing that the security measures are unnecessarily limiting fan expression and hurting local businesses that depend on game-night traffic. The organization questioned why such tight controls remain in place even without the presence of a high-profile political figure.

Game 4 and the chaos on the court

After dropping Game 3 and seeing their momentum halted, the Knicks enter tonight with a 2–1 series lead and a sense of urgency. A win would put them on the brink of a championship, while a loss would shift pressure squarely back onto them heading into Game 5.

Inside the Garden, the atmosphere is expected to be electric, as it has been throughout the postseason. Outside, it may feel more like a controlled operation than the free-flowing street party many fans envisioned.

In a way, that contrast captures this moment perfectly. The Knicks are delivering the kind of run the city has waited decades to see, one that has brought joy, noise, and unity to New York. But as Game 4 approaches, that celebration is being carefully managed, contained within barricades and checkpoints.

Fans will need to plan ahead, arrive early, and be ready for a different kind of game-night experience. Because tonight, getting to the Garden might be almost as intense as the game itself.
