Basketball fans were left stunned when Kyle Filipowski fell to the second round of the NBA Draft, but that was topped by accusations made by the former Duke star’s family.

Amid all the chatter, members of his family took to social media to allege that his fiancée has been grooming him.

ESPN draft analyst Jonathan Givony first gave hint of it when he reported that NBA teams had passed up Filipowski because of a “messy situation.”

“NBA teams are talking about the fact that they had question marks about his girlfriend being so much older than him, why was he estranged from his family because of this whole situation,” said Givony. “He apparently doesn’t talk to his parents or his brother and it’s a very, very odd situation.”

Kyle’s older brother, Daniel Filipowski, then responded to the chatter on Twitter, saying people don’t know the full “extent of the story.”

The story went from weird to wild as revelation after accusation poured out, with word first that his family accuse Filipowski’s girlfriend Caitlin Hutchinson of grooming him as part of a plan to lure him into the Mormon church.

Later it was revealed that Hutchinson, who is seven years Filipowski’s senior, may have been his babysitter when he was younger.

Filipowski has reportedly cut all ties with his father, mother, and older brother, refusing to speak to or about either of them.

Allegations by former Duke team mates that Hutchinson maintained a tight leash on Filipowski and that Duke coaching staff knew and kept a lid on it are fuelling the story as well.

In the end, Kyle Filipowski went in the second round to the Utah Jazz, something that the Twitterverse finds a little too convenient to simply ignore.

With so much flying out of this story it is difficult to tell what is true, what is supposition, and what is just pure melodrama. But if even half of these accusations hold water, then you have a brewing storm for Duke, the Jazz, and the Mormon church, not to mention Kyle and Caitlin. Keep your rubber boots handy, this one may get messy.
