No free shirts? Why the Trail Blazers are changing a key playoff tradition
The Portland Trail Blazers will not give away free t-shirts to the fans at their home playoff game for Games 3 and 4 of the first round against the Spurs.

The Portland Trail Blazers are breaking from one of the NBA’s most famous playoff traditions. For their upcoming first-round home games against the San Antonio Spurs, the Trail Blazers will not provide the customary free playoff T-shirts that typically blanket arenas in a unified color.

What are the Blazers planning instead of free t-shirts?
The decision was confirmed by team president Dewayne Hankins, marking the first time in recent memory that Portland has moved away from the long-standing practice. Playoff shirts have become a staple across the league, used to create a visually striking and intimidating home-court atmosphere.

Instead, the team says they have something else planned. Co-owner Sheel Tyle responded to fans on Reddit, saying the organization is “doing something else” to energize the crowd. While details remain under wraps, Tyle emphasized that the Moda Center will still deliver a loud playoff environment.
We aren’t doing t-shirts because we are doing something else. Moda will be rocking for Game 3 & 4 @trailblazers

Fans quickly took to social media to question the move, with some suggesting the team may not have secured a sponsor in time for the series. Others believe the shift could be intentional, allowing fans to wear their own Trail Blazers gear rather than being coordinated into a single look. Either way, it represents a notable departure from tradition.
Across the National Basketball Association, playoff shirts have long been part of the postseason identity, helping transform arenas into “whiteouts”, “blackouts”, or team-colored spectacles. Portland has historically embraced that approach,.
With Games 3 and 4 set to be played in Portland on April 24 and 26, the Trail Blazers are betting that whatever they have planned can match or even exceed the energy typically generated by a sea of matching shirts. For now, the mystery remains.
