Update:

Dallas Mavericks fans saw the team’s season get completely derailed in the span of a month. After general manager Nico Harrison made the Luka Doncic trade to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis, in secret no less, fans felt betrayed. They boycotted the team, called on Harrison to be fired, gave up season tickets, protested outside the stadium, and stopped watching games altogether.

Since then, AD was injured in his debut and has been out ever since, ticket prices went up, and Kyrie Irving suffered a season-ending injury while carrying the weight of the team in Luka and AD’s absence.

Discouraging AD injury update

On Monday, Davis provided an optimistic and encouraging injury update. The 31-year-old suffered from an adductor strain during his debut on February 8. That sort of injury can take anywhere from two weeks to four months to recover from, depending on how severe it is.

AD has been out for nearly four weeks, but before he left his one game with the Mavs, he showed signs of being the star Harrison believed he would be. And on Monday, he promised to bring that same energy when he returns, and he is said to be progressing well, looking to return to the court sooner rather than later.

However, just the following day, ESPN’s Shams Charania provided a much less optimistic outlook, suggesting that AD won’t return this season at all.

“I think him, his representatives, are gonna huddle up. I think they’re gonna have some very hard conversations,” said Charania. “It’s not out of the realm of possibility that one game was the last time we’ve seen AD this season.”

He may be right. Where there was once hope that an AD and Kyrie duo could keep the Mavericks' playoff chances alive, there now lies despair. Without Kyrie, is there even a point in bringing AD back this late in the season? Especially considering his history of injuries.

Without the two of them and with their generational superstar already a month settled into the Lakers' team, the Mavs will have to lean on their depth on the roster, but with all the injuries, it’s more shallow than anything.
