Update:

NBA fans are still coming to terms with, what for many in the game are citing as one of the biggest trades in basketball after the Dallas Mavericks agreed to a blockbuster move which saw Luka Doncic move to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis. The Mavs will also get Max Christie as part of the deal, with Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris joining the Slovenian in LA.

Out of the blue

No one expected this deal to happen, and from what it sounds like, Doncic too was blindsided by the trade that was kept mostly in the dark both in Dallas and in LA.

“I thought I’d spend my career here and I wanted so badly to bring you a championship,” said the five time First-Team All NBA member just months after bringing the franchise to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2011.

He added: “As I start the next part of my basketball journey, I am leaving the city that will always feel like a home away from home.”

Doncic salary

As part of a five-year, $215 million extension signed in 2022 with Dallas, Doncic is on a guaranteed annual salary of just over $43 million in 2024/25, according to the sports finance specialists Spotrac.

This yearly guaranteed figure is set to rise to $45.9 million in 2025/26 and $48.97 million in 2026/27.

No supermax contract for Luka in LA?

At the Mavericks, Doncic was in line for a supermax extension worth $345 million over five years. However, as pointed out by ESPN’s Bobby Marks, the 25-year-old Slovenian will no longer qualify for a supermax contract at the Lakers.
