Update:

The Philadelphia 76ers are set for a stadium move after the ownership group confirmed plans to build a new arena in South Philadelphia, with a proposed opening date of 2031.

The team will abandon their current Wells Fargo Arena and move to the new "world-class, state-of-the-art" arena in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex that will be the new home of both the 76ers and local ice-hockey team, Philadelphia Flyers.

The new arena is set to be a 50-50 joint venture between Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment and Comcast, which will have naming rights to the arena.

“Today’s announcement is great news for the City of Philadelphia,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a joint statement.

The announcement comes after plans to move the basketball to a more central venue were thwarted by Chinatown residents and local activists who had protested against the project.

“By committing to both investments, the partnership will create thousands of jobs, generate billions of dollars in economic activity for the city, region and state, and enhance commitments to create economic opportunity in neighborhoods across Philadelphia,” the joint statement reads.

The Sixers and Flyers currently play in the Wells Fargo Center, which is owned by Comcast Spectacor until 2031.

The new arena in the south of the city is also expected to open its doors to music concerts and a series of special events.
