Update:

The last time the San Antonio Spurs managed a winning record was in 2018/19, the team’s most recent postseason appearance.

But after years of mediocrity the Spurs may finally be on the verge of challenging for titles with a core of incredible young talents. Another starlet was added on day one of the 2025 NBA Draft, as the Spurs used their No. 2 overall pick on Dylan Harper.

Harper - the son of NBA legend Ron Harper - was by some distance the second-best player in this year’s draft and he is a guard that has the potential to be a star in the league. He joins a Spurs roster that already boasts Stephon Castles and Victor Wembanyama, the last two winners of the NBA’s Rookie of the Year award.

But for all his talent, it’s not year clear if Harper will be an immediate starter for the Spurs. With Castles and De’Aaron Fox there are already two top guards in San Antonio and new head coach Mitch Johnson may decide that Harper will get more experience as lead guard in the secondary unit.

Here’s how the Spurs’ starting five could look for the 2025/26 season: De’Aaron Fox (guard), Stephon Castle (guard), Harrison Barnes (forward), Jeremy Sochan (forward), Victor Wembanyama (center).

Of all the talent in San Antonio, Wembanyama is the one who looks most capable of elevated the team to championship-winning contention. However to get the best out of the Frenchman, a guard-heavy roster will be necessary and Harper will undoubtedly play a key role this season.

At the end of the 2024/25 season, legendary Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich stepped down after 29 years at the helm. He is replaced by Johnson, who previously served as his assistant.

The 38-year-old Johnson is a fitting choice to lead this roster of young talents, players who have won little but still have plenty of time left to achieve their goals. This season may be come a little too soon but fans will expect to see the foundations of a championship-winning team emerge in the coming 12 months.
