Though he may have new representation, can it help him navigate the sticky situation that’s unfolding in Los Angeles?

Though we are no closer to clarity in terms of what will happen between the Lakers and their under-fire point guard, there is certainly an added layer in the mix now that he’s got himself a new agent.

Russell Westbrook signs with a new agent

According to reports on Monday, Los Angeles Lakers star Russell Westbrook has agreed to a new deal with new agent Jeff Schwartz of Excel Sports. The news comes following Westbrook’s announcement just last month that he and longtime agent, Thad Foucher of Wasserman would be parting company. Indeed, Foucher went on to state that the pair had come to “irreconcilable differences” and even went on to indicate that they were no longer in agreement about whether or not Westbrook should stay on the Lakers roster for the final season of his $47 million contract.

What exactly does that mean? As per reports, Foucher advised his client that he should accept the ‘defense-first, off-ball role’ that newly appointed Lakers head coach Darvin Ham had talked up after taking the post. As things stand, it would appear that Westbrook was not at all pleased with his agent’s view and as such, here we are. As mentioned above, Westbrook is entering the final season of a five-year maximum deal. The 33-year-old averaged 18.5 points, 7.4 rebounds and 7.1 assists in 78 games last season and was largely outlined as the ‘fall guy’ in what turned out to be a disastrous season in which the team didn’t even make the playoffs.

Who is Jeff Schwartz?

If nothing else, Russell Westbrook can at least feel confident in the idea that his new agent is no stranger to top talent representation in the NBA. Indeed, Schwartz currently represents: Khris Middleton, Kemba Walker, Kristaps Porzingis, and Mikal Bridges. As an added plus, Lakers fans can also take comfort in some familiar names that are part of Schwartz’s portfolio such as, Brandon Ingram, DeAndre Jordan, Ivica Zubac, Malik Monk and Andre Drummond. Is this the beginning of something better for Westbrook in LA or is it simply a prelude to his departure? With LeBron James’ recent comments about him, all we can do is wait and watch.
