Spurs vs Thunder set for Western Finals showdown, and Wembanyama has MVP momentum on his side
Western Finals matchup with Oklahoma City could strengthen Victor Wembanyama’s MVP case as Spurs continue surging season.
The San Antonio Spurs are officially back among the Western Conference’s elite.
The Spurs overpowered the Minnesota Timberwolves 139-109 in Game 6, clinching a spot in the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2017.
From the opening minutes, San Antonio set the tone. The Spurs dictated pace, played with relentless defensive pressure, and pushed the tempo to take early control. Minnesota never settled into rhythm and was consistently outmatched on both ends of the floor.
Castle takes over Game 6
Stephon Castle delivered a breakout postseason performance when it mattered most.
The young guard finished with 32 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists, knocking down five 3-pointers while controlling the game offensively from start to finish. Castle repeatedly attacked Minnesota’s defense and set the tone for a Spurs team that never allowed a comeback window.
Victor Wembanyama also made his presence felt despite not needing to carry the offensive load. He posted 19 points, six rebounds, and three blocks, anchoring the defense and completely disrupting Minnesota’s interior scoring attempts.
Spurs’ growing edge over Oklahoma City
The timing of San Antonio’s surge could not be better.
In a league where the Oklahoma City Thunder have largely dominated most opponents, the Spurs have flipped the script. Not only have they held their own, they have also tilted the matchup in their favor during the 2025-26 season.
Regular-season and tournament results:
- Dec. 23, 2025: Spurs 130, Thunder 110

The Spurs hold multiple key victories in the matchup, including on the road and in high-stakes tournament play.
A Western Conference Finals showdown looms
This victory means more than just a trip to the next round for San Antonio.
After years of rebuilding, the franchise is back on the biggest stage in the West. The Spurs now prepare for a Western Conference Finals clash with the Oklahoma City Thunder, a title favorite led by its own MVP-level talent.
It sets up a star-driven showdown, a collision of rising powers, and one of the most anticipated series of the postseason. The stakes could not be higher.
