Victor Wembanyama won’t reveal what Popovich told him - but his response said it all
San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama had a private conversation with Gregg Popovich, then went on to dominate the Timberwolves in Game 5.

The San Antonio Spurs are currently up 3-2 in their second-round series against the Minnesota Timberwolves after a monster performance by star Victor Wembanyama. And for him, there was a defining moment that came off-camera before the game began.
One moment with Popovich flipped Wembanyama’s mindset
Following a frustrating Game 4 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, a game in which Wembanyama was ejected after a Flagrant 2 foul on Naz Reid, the young star had a private exchange with franchise icon and Spurs president Gregg Popovich.
The interaction took place on the tarmac after the team returned to San Antonio, where Popovich greeted Wembanyama with a long embrace. While the specifics of their conversation have not been disclosed, Wembanyama made it clear that the moment carried weight, noting afterward that while he would not share what was said, “when he speaks, everybody listens.”

The response to that exchange was immediate and emphatic. In Game 5, Wembanyama delivered one of the most dominant performances of his young career, finishing with 27 points, 17 rebounds and three blocks in a commanding 126-97 victory. The Spurs controlled the game from start to finish, flipping the momentum of the series and moving within one win of the Western Conference finals. While it would be impossible to attribute the performance solely to one conversation, the timing of Wembanyama’s resurgence has inevitably drawn attention to the influence behind the scenes.
Popovich, who stepped down as head coach in 2025 but remains closely involved with the organization, continues to shape the Spurs in ways that extend far beyond formal titles. His presence has been felt throughout the series, including reports that he led a film session after San Antonio dropped Game 1 at home. Even without patrolling the sideline, his voice remains central to the team’s identity and approach.
For Wembanyama, who is still early in his career but already carrying the expectations of a franchise cornerstone, moments like this highlight the significance of that relationship. The exchange on the tarmac may never be fully explained, but its impact was evident in the way he responded on the court. It served as a reminder that leadership within the Spurs organization still runs through Popovich, and that Wembanyama is quickly becoming its next standard-bearer.
