Update:

The Cleveland Cavaliers are up 3-2 in the second-round series against the Detroit Pistons. They need just one more win to move on to the Conference Finals. But heading into Game 6, they’ve been hit with an unfortunate issue that may complicate things.

Cavaliers hit with alarming illness ahead of must-win Game 6

The Cavaliers were just beginning to take control of the series, but now, just hours before a pivotal Game 6, a new and unexpected concern has emerged.

According to reports, an illness has been circulating inside the locker room ahead of Cleveland’s matchup with the Pistons. With a chance to close out the series on the road, the Cavaliers may not be at full strength physically, even if the roster appears intact on paper.

Details from Joe Vardon of The Athletic paint a concerning picture behind the scenes. Head coach Kenny Atkinson is reportedly dealing with an upper respiratory issue, while guard Sam Merrill was described as “violently ill” during the break between games, an indication that a stomach virus could also be affecting members of the team. The combination of symptoms suggests this may not be an isolated case, but rather something moving through the group.

In the playoffs, recovery time is even more limited and physical intensity is at its peak. Even a minor illness can have a significant impact in the postseason. Fatigue, dehydration and reduced stamina can quickly become factors in a tightly contested game.

Against a young, energetic Pistons team, any dip in energy or sharpness could be exposed quickly. Detroit has already shown they can capitalize on physical play and fast-paced stretches. If Cleveland isn’t operating at full capacity, the balance of the series could shift just as quickly as it did earlier.

A win in Game 6 would send the Cavaliers through to the next round, where a matchup with the New York Knicks awaits. Advancing now would be especially valuable given the current circumstances, as it would provide extra recovery time for players dealing with illness before the next series begins.

A loss, however, would force a Game 7, an outcome that becomes significantly more dangerous if the team is still not fully healthy. The Cavs and Pistons are set to tip off tonight (Friday, May 15) at 7 p.m. ET tonight at Rocket Arena.
