Celtics held off Warriors to go 2-1 up

On Wednesday Cetics’ stars Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum and Marcus Smart put in a performance to be remembered. Brown put 27 points on the board while Jayson Tatum added 26 and the Marcus Smart - never to be left out - contributed 24 as Boston thwarted another third-quarter onslaught by the Golden State Warriors to clinch a 116-100 victory. With the win the Celtics now have a 2-1 lead in the NBA Finals and will of course enjoy home court advantage when Game 4 tips off on Friday night.

Gregg Popovich’s students: Steve Kerr and Ime Udoka

It must surely be a pleasure for Gregg Poppovich as he watches the NBA finals with the two coaches involved having both served as assistant coaches under him at one point. Indeed, neither of them make any secret of the love they have for the NBA’s career victory leader or the effect that he’s had on their respective approaches to the game. Where Ime Udoka is concerned, the Celtics coach is inching closer to becoming only the 10th coach in NBA history to win a title in his first season. Incidentally, the man he faces in the Finals is also on that list as Steve Kerr did in fact guide the Warriors to an NBA title in his first season back in 2015. Should the Celtics prevail, it will be their 18th NBA championship which would break the tie they currently have with the Los Angeles Lakers for the most in the league’s history. As for Golden State they are looking at their 7th title if they can overturn the current deficit and go on to win it all. It would see them break the tie they have with the Chicago Bulls for 3rd most in NBA history.

The Payton father son club

One interesting statistic that’s in play in this series is that of the Payton family. Gary Payton won an NBA championship back in 2006 with the Miami Heat and should his son Gary Payton II manage to do so with the Golden State Warriors, they will join a select group of fathers and sons who have managed the feat in the NBA’s history. The othe duos include Mychal Thompson and the Warriors’ Klay Thompson, Bill Walton and Luke Walton, Rick Barry and Brent Barry and Matt Guokas Sr. and Matt Guokas Jr.
