Update:

LeBron James has exercised his $52.6 million player option to remain with the LA Lakers for the 2025/26 NBA season, but his future is far from settled.

The news of his extension came with a caveat, in the form of a message from agent Rich Paul which stated that he was still evaluating “what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career.”

That has opened the possibility of a trade away from the Lakers for LeBron’s 23rd season in the NBA, particularly if the veteran superstar is unimpressed with the quality of player being brought to the franchise over the summer.

It’s a fluid situation and one that could make life tricky for Bronny James, LeBron’s son and current Lakers teammate. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Bronny revealed that he isn’t sure whether his father will stay with the Lakers for the upcoming season.

“We don’t really talk about it much,” Bronny said. “I think when stuff like that does come up, he just tells me to not worry about it, to not even pay attention to it [and] just lock into what you have going on right now. And that’s what’s going to get me better and to keep me focused. I think it’s good that he tells me to not pay attention to that stuff.”

The Lakers have sought to show ambition with their offseason work so far, bringing in two players to fortify the team for 2025/26. Deandre Ayton, the first overall pick at the 2018 NBA Draft, arrives as a free agent, while forward Jake LaRavia is reportedly coming in to replace Dorian Finney-Smith.

Whatever they do, the Lakers will never be far from the headlines. The task facing the team’s front office is getting the best out of a star-studded but disjointed roster. Nevertheless, Bronny James is confident that the Lakers are on the right track.

“Obviously being on the team, I think we’re going come back even better than we were last year,” he explained. “We just got to come in here and come in the gym with a purpose and be ready to work every day and be ready to get better every day.”
