What is the best start to an NBA season in history? This how many games the Cavs need to break the record
The Cleveland Cavaliers have started 2024 with a 15-game winning streak, putting them on track for the all-time NBA record.
The Cleveland Cavaliers face their biggest test of the new season on Tuesday, taking on reigning NBA champions Boston Celtics at TD Garden.
The Cavs will not be daunted by the trip to Boston, however, as they come into the game in red-hot form. Kenny Atkinson’s team have begun the year with 15 wins from their first 15 games, most recently beating the Charlotte Hornets last Sunday.
That victory over the Hornets made them just the fourth team in NBA history to begin with 15 straight wins. If they triumph against the Celtics on Tuesday, they will become only the second team to win their first 16 games.
However, they still have some way to go to catch the current record-holders...
What is the best start to an NBA season?
A 16th straight victory would be an incredible achievement for the Cavs, who were eliminated from last season’s playoffs by the Celtics. But even a victory for Cleveland would leave them eight games adrift of the all-time record.
That is the benchmark set by the iconic Golden State Warriors team of 2015/16. Not only did they start the season with a league-record 24 consecutive wins, their 73-9 record also beat the previous best of 72 regular season wins held by the 1995/96 Chicago Bulls team.
Along with this season’s Cavs, the Houston Rockets (1993/94) and the Washington Capitols (1948/49) have each recorded 15 consecutive wins at the start of a season.
Last season Cleveland were beaten by the Celtics in the Conference semi-finals and J. B. Bickerstaff was fired as head coach. The start made by Kenny Atkinson has exceeded all expectations but the new man doesn’t seem to be feeling the pressure just yet.
“It’s great for the NBA, right?” Atkinson told reporters in a recent press conference. “Everybody is going to be watching, and I know our guys are anxious. I know they remember last year. We’re going well. They’re going well. It’s great for the league. Great for our franchise. We’re excited.”
