What’s next for Kawhi Leonard? Clippers star faces questions after play-in exit
The Los Angeles Clippers are out of the playoffs after losing to the Golden State Warriors in the Play-In tournament, and now Leonard’s future is in doubt.
The Los Angeles Clippers’ season ended by slowly slipping away until it disappeared completely. A 126–121 loss to the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Play-In Tournament brought their season to an abrupt close, but the result itself is only part of the story. Almost immediately, the focus shifted to what comes next, particularly for Kawhi Leonard.
What does the future hold for Kawhi Leonard?
Leonard delivered a steady performance over the course of the game, but the closing minutes unfortunately told a different story. As Golden State’s defense tightened, his opportunities became more limited. The clean looks that had been available earlier in the night disappeared, replaced by heavy pressure and contested possessions. Down the stretch, he was far less involved than expected for a player of his caliber, a reflection of both the Warriors’ defensive adjustments and the Clippers’ struggles to maintain offensive rhythm.
That finish stood in contrast to the magnitude of the moment. This was a game the Clippers had controlled for long stretches, building a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter and positioning themselves to advance. Instead, they were outplayed when it mattered most, unable to halt Golden State’s momentum or generate the kind of late-game execution needed to close.
Leonard remains one of the most efficient and composed players in the league, but his situation is no longer as straightforward as it once was. Injuries have been a recurring factor in recent seasons, and the team around him has continued to evolve without fully settling into a reliable identity. The expectations, however, have not changed. The Clippers are still judged by their ability to compete for a title, and anything short of that invites scrutiny.
That is the tension now facing the organization. There is still elite talent, still the potential for a deep run, but also growing uncertainty about whether this group can consistently deliver in the moments that matter most. This loss, in many ways, encapsulated that uncertainty. The Clippers showed how good they can be, and then, in the final minutes, how fragile that control can become.
