Who are the splash brothers? Origin of the nickname
Ever wonder why Curry and Thompson were given the Splash brothers’ nickname? We got you.
If there is one duo that took the last decade of the NBA world by storm, it is that of Steph Curry and Klay Thompson.
The two Warriors stars are not only regarded as the greatest shooters in NBA history, but they’re also considered the greatest backcourts of all time. Curry and Thompson revolutionized basketball with their three-point field goals from anywhere on the court, setting various NBA records and getting the name: the Splash Brothers.
Why are Curry and Thompson called the Splash Brothers?
Back in Dec. 2012, the Warriors and Charlotte Bobcats were playing a normal basketball match on just another NBA day when the GSW’s duo swooshed seven three-pointers by halftime.
That night, Brian Witt, a beat writer for Warriors.com, took to twitter with hashtag #SplashBrothers, referring to the splash sound Curry and Thompson create whenever they swoop the hoop. NBA fans picked it up.
With 12 combined three-pointers and a total of 47 points by the duo that night, the Warriors won 115-100 and a new moniker was brought to life. Witt himself was proud of his creation, sharing with the world that “It’s my claim to fame. It’s something no one can take away. It’s proof I lived on this earth that I created ‘The Splash Brothers”.
