Update:

After 29 seasons as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, Gregg Popovich has officially left the role. The NBA legend won five championships with the team and his run with the Spurs was the longest of any active coach in major US sports leagues.

Popovich will officially transition to the role of team president, leaving a vacancy in the coaching position for the first time in three decades. He will be replaced by Mitch Johnson, a former assistant who took charge of the team on an interim basis when Popovich suffered a mild stroke last November.

Johnson oversaw a 31-45 record in Popovich’s absence and has now been with the team for a decade. While the change is a historic one for the Spurs, there is a clear focus on continuity going forward.

I am truly grateful and honored to receive this incredible opportunity,” Johnson said, announcing the news on Friday. “I am thankful for Coach Pop, RC, Brian and Peter trusting me to carry on our culture and I promise to give this responsibility everything I have to make Spurs fans proud.”

The new head coach is steeped in the team’s recent history, while Popovich is expected to remain a visible presence at the Spurs’ facility. General manager Bran Wright also remains with the team.

“While my love and passion for the game remain, I’ve decided it’s time to step away as head coach,” Popovich said in a statement. “I’m forever grateful to the wonderful players, coaches, staff and fans who allowed me to serve them as the Spurs head coach and am excited for the opportunity to continue to support the organization, community and city that are so meaningful to me.”
