Why do the LA Lakers have a black ribbon with the number 44 on their jerseys?

You may have spotted something different about the Lakers this season, a small band with a big meaning.

LeBron James and co. are clearly recognisable with their iconic uniforms, but for the 2024-25 season, the Los Angeles Lakers have added a tribute to their purple and gold: a black band on the left shoulder, inscribed with the number 44. But why?

A ribbon for Mr Clutch

This is to honour Jerry West, the Lakers legend who passed away in June at the age of 86. Known to many as “Mr. Clutch,” West wore the No. 44 throughout his illustrious playing career with the Lakers. His contribution to the team, both on the court and in the front office, made him an enduring figure in Lakers and NBA history.

West was a central figure in Lakers lore long before he was the silhouette for the NBA logo. The No. 2 overall pick in the 1960 NBA Draft, West went on to a 14-season career with the Lakers, leading them to a championship in 1972. He amassed impressive stats: over 25,000 points, more than 6,200 assists, and just over 5,300 rebounds. Notably, West holds a unique honour as the only player to be named Finals MVP despite playing for the losing team, thanks to his remarkable performance in the 1969 Finals against the Boston Celtics.

Beyond his playing career, West continued to shape the Lakers as a coach and general manager, setting up the dynasty that would eventually bring championships in the early 2000s.

The Lakers' homage to West has involved more than the black band. They distributed commemorative jerseys with his No. 44 to fans at their season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Suns tribute for McCoy

The Lakers are not the only team paying tribute in this way. Legendary commentator for the Phoenix Suns Al McCoy passed away aged 91 in September. He had been the team’s voice for 51 years and lived and breathed Suns basketball until his death. A black band along the left shoulder of the jersey with “AL” in white writing is being worn throughout the season.
