Wow, wow, this is a big one. On Monday, St. John’s named Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino as head coach. This is insane Pitino returns to the basketball Big East 10 years after leaving Louisville and 37 years after Providence.

This has been a thing for a couple of months and is not a decision made lightly by any of the parts. According to various sources, Pitino met with the St. John’s administration on Sunday and agreed to coach the Red Storm on Monday.

A press conference has been set for Tuesday at 12 ET at Madison Square Garden. Pitino’s six-year deal allegedly offers about $20 million for six years.

What other college basketball teams has he coached?

Pitino’s career college basketball record is 834-293, not official. The actual wins by Pitino’s in his NCAA career are 711-290. In addition to leading Providence and Kentucky to championship victories, he is the first coach in basketball history to lead two separate schools to the Final Four.

He coached programs at Boston University, Providence, the University of Kentucky, the University of Louisville, and the Institute of Notre Dame. Now Pitino will add St. John’s to his list of schools. It will be Pitino’s eleventh head coaching gig altogether, including stops with the New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, Panathinaikos (Greece), and the national teams of Puerto Rico and Greece.
