Update:

The San Francisco 49ers are hoping to put last season in the rearview as quickly as possible, and they started looking towards the future by signing their franchise QB to a long term deal. Now Brock Purdy is widely being considered a steal to win the NFL’s MVP this year.

Mr. Irrelevant to Mr. Big Bucks

Mr. Irrelevant has come a long was since being taken by the Niners with the very last pick of the draft. A lot of things had to happen, not just for him to sign the five-year, $265 million contract, but to even start a game for the Niners.

First he had to make the team. Then he had to secure his spot on the roster. Next, the assumed future of the franchise, Trey Lance, went down in Week 1 with a season ended injury. Back up QB Jimmy Garoppolo filled in for a couple months before getting injured for the remainder of the season. Purdy stepped to the stage and has been the starting quarterback in San Fran ever since.

He brought them to the 2023 NFL Championship before suffering a shoulder injury that knocked him out of the game early in the first half. Purdy returned and the Niners got all the way to the Super Bowl the next season with Purdy having a sensational year. They would fall to the Kansas City Chiefs, and that’s when the trouble started. Last year the Niners were plagued with injuries on both ends of the ball. Sideline dust ups started to pop up, and things went south quickly in San Fran.

Brock’s a long shot for MVP

One of the leading causes for the subpar season in the Bay was the injury to Christian McCaffery. He missed a big chuck of the first half of the season and the Niners offense struggled to score points, making it hard to win games. Purdy put up 3,864 yards, which isn’t bad, but it’s not terrific. The problem was he threw just 20 TDs and 12 INTs. Those were awfully pedestrian numbers for someone looking for a mega deal in the following offseason.

One of the reasons for Purdy and the Niners success was the luxury of having a young QB and a young QBs rookie salary which was brining him in $1.8 million a year. That allowed everyone else to get a slice of the pie, but now Purdy is going to have fewer options which some stars shipping out. Now is the former Iowa State’s time to shine, and those of you who like to put a betting future in at the start of the season might be licking your lips at the prospect of Purdy’s MVP odds. He’s 28 to 1 to win the MVP which is 10th on the odds board.

There is still a lot of talent on this roster, and there is still a great coaching staff. Brock Purdy has answered all the questions asked of him in the first three years in the league, but some will still second guess the contract he was given. He can shut the haters up with a big season this year, and he make an even bigger statement winning the MVP after guys like Deebo Samuel, Jordan Mason and Elijah Mitchell shipped out this offseason.
