49ers stun Eagles 23–19 in Philly, advance to face Seahawks in Divisional Round
The San Francisco 49ers walked into a hostile Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday and walked out with one of the biggest wins of Wild Card Weekend, knocking off the reigning NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles 23–19 to punch their ticket to the Divisional Round.
Behind Brock Purdy's resilience, a late offensive surge, and a defense that delivered in the game’s biggest moments, San Francisco erased multiple deficits and silenced the Philly crowd with a dramatic fourth-quarter takeover. The victory sends the 49ers to Seattle next week to face the top-seeded Seahawks, while the Eagles’ season ends abruptly at home.
Early fireworks
San Francisco wasted no time showing they weren’t intimidated by the stage. On the game’s opening drive, Purdy hit DeMarcus Robinson for a 61-yard strike to flip the field, then capped the possession with a short touchdown pass to Robinson to give the 49ers a quick 7–0 lead.
Philadelphia answered immediately. Saquon Barkley gashed the Niners’ defense with a 29-yard run, setting up a creative touchdown in which Dallas Goedert took a handoff into the end zone. Jake Elliott missed the extra point, leaving Philly down 7–6 after one quarter.
The Eagles leaned heavily on Barkley (26 carries, 106 yards), controlling stretches of the game on the ground, but San Francisco consistently responded with explosive plays through the air.
Goedert shines, Kittle exits
The second quarter belonged to tight ends...until one was lost for the night.
Goedert hauled in his second touchdown of the game on a gutsy 4th-and-2 call, with Jalen Hurts delivering a 9-yard strike to put Philadelphia up 13–7. Hurts finished with 168 passing yards and a touchdown, spreading the ball around but struggling to generate downfield rhythm against San Francisco’s coverage.
The 49ers answered late in the half with a 36-yard field goal by Eddy Piñeiro, but the drive came at a cost. Star tight end George Kittle suffered an Achilles injury and was ruled out, forcing San Francisco to reshuffle its offense on the fly.
Philadelphia took a 13–10 lead into halftime, but the game remained wide open.
Momentum swings and missed chances
The third quarter turned into a defensive chess match. Jake Elliott extended the Eagles’ lead with a field goal, pushing Philly ahead 16–10 midway through the quarter.
But missed opportunities were abundant. Brock Purdy was intercepted twice by rookie corner Quinyon Mitchell, giving the Eagles prime chances to pull away. Philadelphia couldn’t capitalize fully.
Despite the turnovers, Purdy kept attacking, finishing 19-of-32 for 286 yards and three total touchdowns, repeatedly pushing the ball downfield to Robinson (6 catches, 111 yards) and Jauan Jennings.
Trickery, toughness, and a dramatic finish
San Francisco flipped the game early in the fourth quarter with a perfectly timed trick play. Skyy Moore lateraled to Jennings, who then launched a 29-yard touchdown pass to Christian McCaffrey. The play stunned the crowd and put the 49ers back on top, 17–16.
Philadelphia briefly regained the lead with an Elliott field goal, but the Niners delivered their most composed drive of the night when it mattered most. Purdy converted key third downs with his legs and arm, then capped the march with a 4-yard touchdown pass to McCaffrey, his second receiving score of the night, giving San Francisco a 23–19 lead with under three minutes remaining.
McCaffrey finished with six catches for 66 yards and two touchdowns, once again proving indispensable even on a night when the rushing lanes were tight.
Defense seals it
The Eagles had one last chance, driving into San Francisco territory in the final two minutes. Hurts found DeVonta Smith and Goedert to move the chains, but on 4th-and-11, linebacker Eric Kendricks delivered the play of the game, tipping Hurts’ pass at the line of scrimmage to force an incompletion.
Moments later, Purdy knelt it out, and the upset was complete.

First half recap: Eagles 13, 49ers 10
It's been a wild opening half at Lincoln Financial Field! The 49ers drew first blood with a short touchdown pass to DeMarcus Robinson, but the Eagles quickly answered with a touchdown catch from tight end Dallas Goedert, though the first PAT was missed. Both teams traded key drives, with the Eagles’ offense coming alive late in the half as Jalen Hurts connected with Goedert again for a 4th-down TD, putting Philly up 13-7.
San Francisco managed to get on the board again with a 36-yard field goal from Eddy Piñeiro just before halftime, cutting the deficit to 13-10. The Niners also lost star tight end George Kittle to an Achilles injury, while the Eagles had to shuffle their offensive line with Lane Johnson out.
Drama capped the half when Brock Purdy fumbled while running out the clock, ending the half. Both teams have shown big-play potential, and the second half promises plenty of fireworks in this tightly contested Wild Card clash. The Eagles will get the ball to start the second half.

Eagles-Niners Injury Report/Inactives
Eagles Injury Report
Philadelphia enters the Wild Card matchup shorthanded up front, as star right tackle Lane Johnson is inactive with a lingering foot injury. It marks Johnson's eighth straight missed game after exiting early in Week 11. The Eagles are otherwise relatively healthy, and veteran swing tackle Fred Johnson will start again at right tackle, a role he’s handled well since being acquired earlier this season. With offensive line depth tested, rookies Drew Kendall and Cameron Williams are active to provide reinforcement in the trenches.

49ers Injury Report
San Francisco will be without one of its top young playmakers, as wide receiver Ricky Pearsall is inactive. The bigger news, however, is the return of All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams, who is active despite battling a hamstring injury. The 49ers are thin at linebacker, with Dee Winters and Luke Gifford both sidelined after injuries in the regular-season finale, forcing San Francisco to elevate Jalen Graham from the practice squad for added depth. Cornerback Renardo Green and defensive lineman Keion White, both listed as questionable during the week, will suit up.

Philly bar sparks viral fan feud ahead of Eagles–49ers
A Philadelphia sports bar became an unexpected playoff storyline this week after politely, and very publicly, rejecting a request to host about 200 traveling 49ers fans ahead of today's Wild Card matchup.
Ladder 15 shared a tongue-in-cheek email on Instagram declaring its loyalty to the Eagles, and the post quickly went viral, igniting backlash from Niners fans and cheers from Birds supporters. The fallout escalated fast. The bar was hit with prank voicemails, review-bombed online to the point Yelp temporarily locked its page, and drew national attention after the story reached major sports podcasts.
While the owners estimate they turned down roughly $5,000 in business, they said hosting that many opposing fans would have been a disaster given the bar’s location near Broad Street and its deep ties to the Eagles. In true Philly fashion, the situation blended trash talk, backlash, and playoff passion, all before a single snap is played at Lincoln Financial Field.
Today’s forecast
Yesterday in Philly, it was wet, rainy, cold and flat out nasty. They covered the field at the Link and that means the field should be in tip top condition.
Today, the high is 44 degrees but temperatures could drop down to the low 30s by the end of the game. There is a slight chance for some snow or rain but the real challenge will be the wind. There was a howling wind yesterday in Philly, and while today it won't be as strong, it will be something that the players have to keep in mind.
Playoffs so far
Four teams are already in the next round of the playoffs after Wild Card Saturday. The Seahawks and Broncos earned the one seed so they are automatically in the Divisional Round but the LA Rams had a dramatic win over the Panthers in Carolina and the Bears stunned the Packers in a massive comeback win after going to the halftime break down 21-3.
At the moment, the Bills and Jaguars are squaring off with minutes left to see which team will advance to the AFC Divisional Round.
The tale of the tail backs
Two of the top running backs in the league go head to head today from Philly.
Saquon Barkley is the reigning Offensive Player of the Year, and ran for 2,000 yards last season. This season he has been far from his best but everyone knows that he shines in these big games, much like he did last year in the Eagles Super Bowl run. This year he ran for just 1,140 yards, and just seven TDs.
While Christian McCaffrey nearly had a 1,000 yard rushing and receiving season, his rushing stats aren't as high as they usually are. He had 1,202 yards and 10 TDs rushing and another 924 yards receiving and seven TDs during the regular season.
Today, both of these running backs are going to be spotlighted and the one who wins the head to head battle might be the one leading their team to the next round.
Big boost for Niners with Trent back
If there is one player on the offensive side that could be more important than Brock Purdy or Christian McCaffrey it is TrentWilliams. The left tackle protects the QBs blind side and opens up holes for McCaffrey in the run game. He missed the Niners last game with a hamstring injury and the Seahawks were able to shut the San Fran offense down and get to Brock Purdy over and over again. He is set to play tonight and that is a massive boost for Purdy and the Niners.
Niners star watch
San Francisco survived without BrockPurdy, and there were even whispers of Mac Jones replacing him once Purdy got healthy. But Brock quickly showed how silly those rumors and that speculation was when he came back.
He led the Niners to six straight wins, and in the last three games of that streak he threw for nearly 300 yards a game. The Niners paid the former Mr. Irrelevant big bucks this season, but they didn't cough up the cash for him to put up stats in the regular season. They made him their face of the franchise to win games like the one they have today.
Eagles star watch
If there is one thing that quarterback JalenHurts knows how to do, it's win at all costs.
He can put up big numbers if he needs to, but knows he doesn’t have to go for 300 yards and 3 TDs every time he steps on the field. He threw for 3,224 yards, 25 TDs and 6 INTs during the regular season which aren’t numbers that will blow you away and if it wasn’t for his four INT game against the Chargers, his TD to INT ratio would be even more impressive. Now is when Hurts is going to want to play his best, but that doesn’t mean taking over the game. It means managing the game, no making mistakes or turnovers and keeping the Eagles in the game until it’s their time to pounce.
Eagles' path to the postseason
The Eagles title defense season has been full of ups and downs, but despite the peaks and valleys, Philly won the NFC East in a year that the rest of the division was underwhelming.
They won their first four games, and then had a two game slide against the Broncos and the Giants. They would bounce back, but a three game skid that started on Thanksgiving would plummet them out of the contention for the one seed. Still, they locked up the division East with a few weeks to go in the seasons and coach Nick Sirriani decided to rest his guys in Week 18 to set up a match up with the Niners in the opening round of the playoffs.
Niners' path to the postseason
Despite the injuries and the obstacles they had to face all season, the Niners had a chance to win the top seed in the NFC in the final week of the regular season.
Quarterback Brock Purdy missed eight of the first 10 games of the season, but Mac Jones came and in led them to a 6-4 record. Purdy came back, but then the injuries would rack up on the other side of the ball as Nick Bosa and Fred Warner went down with season ending injuries. Once Purdy came back in Week 11, the Niners won six straight, putting them in position to win the one seed in a winner take all Week 18 match up against the Seahawks, but Seattle was able to shut San Fran down and drop the Niners down to a Wild Card spot as they took the top spot in the NFC.
Win or go home
For the last three years, the path to the Super Bowl in the NFC went through either Philadelphia or San Francisco. Tonight, both of those conference heavyweights go head to head with only one team moving on after today's slugfest from the City of Brotherly Love.
