Fresh from a win against the GOAT in Tampa Bay, San Francisco’s Brock Purdy appears to have found his footing, but can he maintain against a Seahawks side that’s desperate for a win?

49ers vs Seahawks: The lay of the land

When the San Francisco 49ers visit the Seattle Seahawks for ‘Thursday Night Football,’ they will be hoping to clinch their second NFC West title in four years. The last time these two teams met, was back in Week 2 when the 49ers who now sit on a 9-4 record, defeated the Seahawks 27-7. At the moment Seattle has a 7-6 record and are two games behind their opponents with four left to play. In their last game, fell to the Panthers 30-24 in what was their third loss in four games - like we said desperate for a win. The 49ers on the other hand, are looking for their seventh consecutive victory after seeing off Tom Brady and the Buccaneers in their last game. Indeed, if there were any doubts remaining about Brock Purdy’s relevance, it goes without saying that Mr. Irrelevant has erased them. Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. ET. at Lumen Field in Seattle.

Brock Purdy leads the way for the 49ers

If there’s one thing that we’ve learned since starting QB Jimmy Garoppolo broke his foot, it’s that there was no negative effect. Selected as the final pick in this year’s NFL draft, third-string quarterback Brock Purdy has proven himself to be an asset, as he’s spearheaded the production of 58 points across 7 1/2 quarters in the last two games. The 22-year-old replaced Garoppolo mid-game in Week 13 against the Dolphins and threw two TDs. Then, most recently in Week 14, he did so again on the road to defeating the Bucs as we mentioned before. It’s also worth mentioning that he bagged a rushing touchdown as well.

With that said, the 49ers aren’t just about offense. First in the NFL in yards allowed (286.8), points allowed (15.2) and against the run (75.1 yards), San Francisco is more than capable of grinding a game out if Purdy and Co. falter. They also are tied for second with 14 interceptions, and defensive end Nick Bosa leads the league with 14.5 sacks in 12 games after posting a career-high 15.5 last year.

Are the Seahawks the best worst team?

When looking at the Seattle Seahawks, it can be a little confusing. On the one side, they’ve given up the third-most points in the NFL this season. On the other, they’ve literally been among the highest scoring teams in the league. With an average of 26.3 points per game, the Seahawks are ranked sixth in the league and have recorded at least 23 in nine of their 13 games. Be that as it may, the Seahawks will be facing the best defense in the league come Thursday night, which means they will have to depend heavily on their passing game.

Assuming they do just that, the responsibility will fall on the shoulders of veteran quarterback Geno Smith, who is currently sixth in the league with a career-high 3,433 passing yards. We should also mention that this is in fact his first season as starter since 2014 when he was with the New York Jets. Now 32-years-old, Smith ranks fourth with 25 touchdown passes and has thrown at least two in his last seven games. Expect to see him targeting his favorite WR Tyler Lockett, who currently leads the team with eight TDs - one in each of his last six straight games.

49ers vs Seahawks: The Prediction

Though we’ve highlighted Purdy’s prowess, we’ve got to tip our hats to Christian McCaffrey and rookie Jordan Mason, both of whom we expect to literally run all over the Seahawks, with the help of San Francisco’s excellent blocking. In truth, we’re expecting the aforementioned Purdy to have an easy ride on Thursday night. That’s not to say, this will be a blowout, but it’s hard to see the Seahawks being able to produce much without the likes of Walker and Smith. We’re going with 24-17 49ers win.
