Falcons 15 vs 25 Panthers summary: stats and highlights | NFL Thursday Night Football

The Carolina Panthers got back into the race for the NFC South with a primetime win over the Atlanta Falcons on a soggy night in Charlotte. D’onte Foreman led the Panthers to the 25-15 victory with 130 yards on the ground to improve to 3-7 on the season.

Pineiro gets his redemption

It was the second time these two divisional rivals matched up in 12 days and Thursday night’s game could not have been more different than the shootout we saw in Week 8.

Eddy Pineiro was one of the reasons the Panthers lost the previous showdown against the Falcons, missing an extra point to win the game and then game winning field goal in the overtime session. On his home field the Carolina kicker went 4/4 and was a crucial part of the Panthers success in a rainy, slippery game from Bank of America Stadium.

The Panthers beat the Falcons at their own game, running the ball for a total of 232 yards. Foreman had 130 of those yards on 31 carries and Laviska Shenault scored the first touchdown of the game with a 42 yard TD on a swing pass that was counted as a run to put the home side up 10-0.

Walker and Panthers improving every game

The Falcons run game never took off, and Marcus Mariota was under constant pressure from the Carolina front four. Atlanta’s QB was the team’s top rusher on the night with 43 yards, but he was also sacked five times.

After being throughly dominated in the first half the Falcons managed to score a late field goal to make it 13-3. The Falcons managed an early touchdown at the start of the second half when Mariota hit Drake London to cut the lead, but the missed Younghoe Koo PAT made it 13-9.

That was the closest the game would ever get, but the comeback bid was short lived as P.J. Walker and the Panthers marched down the field on the next possession and D’onte Foreman finished off the drive with a 12 yard run to make it a two possession game.

Atlanta's comeback bid too little, too late

Atlanta rekindled their hope with a late touchdown after a 97-yard rapid fire drive finished off by KhaDarel Hodge’s 25 yard catch to bring the score to 22-15. The Falcons would get the ball again, but never got close to scoring the game tying touchdown.

The NFC South is now wide open. The Panthers sit at the bottom of the standings at 3-7 while the Falcons are 4-6. Depending on what Tampa Bay does later this weekend the Falcons, Saints, Bucs and Panthers could all be under .500 and all be within a game of each other.

The Falcons couldn't get anything going in the fourth quarter but they got a late ray of hope when Mariota hit Hodge on a 25 yard TD pass after a 97 yard drive.

The Falcons would get the ball back, but ended up turning it over in their own territory.

The Panters squashed those comeback hopes when they scored on the next possession to stretch the lead to stretch the lead to double digits late in the third quarter.

After scoring a late first half field goal, the Falcons scored an early TD in the third quarter when Mariota hit London to make it a game momentarily.

The Panthers defense was relentless all night, sacking Mariota 5 times and forcing the pick by Joe Horn Jr right after going up 10-0 with the Shenault TD.

Thursday night's game got off to a snails pace, but Walker hit Shenault for a 41 yard swing pass that was actually ruled a run for all you fantasy nerds out there.

Carolina ran for a total of 232 yard on a night where D'onta Freeman carried the ball 31 times for 130 yards.

P.J. Walker didn't have to be great for the Panthers to win. He threw for 108 yards on 10/16 passing in the Week 19 victory.

The Panthers take care of buisness at home to get back in the race in the NFC South!. The run game let loose on a soggy night in Carolina and the Panthers are now within striking distance of the divison leading Bucs.

The Panthers go three and out after the turnover on downs after Walker hits Moore for a short gain of 1.

The punt pins the Falcons inside of the 4 yard line and down by 13 with just over five minutes to go in the game.

Walker was surrounded and lookef for Foreman but was alomst picked off.

CAR will be happy to see the FG unit come on after seeing that pass almost intercepted.

Shenault gets the pass on a similar play to the TD, but only gets 3 yards this time.

Koo missed the PAT to keep it at 13-9 but the Falcons are starting to get some momentum.

Mariota should have been picked by Jackson, but for good reason. There was a pass interference on the DB and the Falcons will have a 1st down form the CAR 31 after the penalty.

Mariota drops back looking for Pitts, but the pass came in too high and that was a missed opportunity on first down.

Williams gets 14 yards on the punt return and the Falcons will start their drive with great field position.

Foreman up the middle for no gain and a flag flies for holding, but the Falcons decline and that will bring up 2nd and 10 from the 1.

Walker and the Panthers start their drive from the 2 and a false start backs them up to the 1 yard line.

Mariota rolling right and rolling, and rolling and running out of bounds for a loss of 5.

They weren't in field goal range so the loss doesn't take points off the board, but the Falcons will have to punt and what a punt it was!

Allgeier runs to the left side and he picked up the first down, but a holding call will back up the Falcons to to 2nd and 11 from the CAR 38.

Those kinds of plays kill the Falcons. Their offense isn't good enough to make up for those kinds of mistakes.

Mariota pops out of the pocket and picks up the first down and a defensive holding call will tack on 5 yards to the end of the run.

ATL start the drive from their 29 and Patterson gets 3 yards on first down.

Walker's pass to Shenault is incomplete and that will bring an abrupt end to the Panthers first drive of the third quarter.

Foreman on a run to the right side for six yards, but that still leaves a 3rd and long for the Panthers on their first possession of the second half.

Walker rolling out looking for Marshall who had it jarred out of his possession. It looked like a fumble but after refs discussion, it was ruled incomplete.

A personal foul on CAR will bring them bak to 2nd and 22 from the CAR 22.

The Panthers start the half off with the ball from the 25 yard line.

Shenault takes it to the house for the 41 yard run! Any fantasy owners who have P.J. Walker will be hating the fact that that counts as a run.

P.J. Walker is 5/7 for just 38 yards, but the run game has taken off. Carolna has 138 yards on the ground, including Foreman's 55 yards and Shenault has 42 yards and the lone TD of the game.

Mariota has just 63 yards passing and that forced interception in the second quarter, and the Falcons run game has yet to get going. They have just 33 yards on 12 rushes.

We are done with two quarters of action from Charlotte and it's been all Carolina so far.

Carolina has 159 yards of offense, while the Falcons have just 96, and 60 of them came on the last drive.

Pineiro had a long day against the Falcons two weeks ago, but starts his night off with a 46 yard field goal to put the Panthers on the board.

Walker is almost intercepted in the end zone looking for Moore. Hall was there to make the break up and almost turned it into a pick in the end zone.

It's a chilly rainy night in Charlotte, and the Falcons will recieve. Patterson takes the run back to the 27 but a flag will give the Falcons 1st and 10 from the 17.

Baker backing up tonight

Baker Mayfield was brought in this offseason and the Panthers were hoping that he would finally provide some much needed stability at the quarterback position. That won’t be the case tonight, at least to start the game. One time third stringer P.J. Walker will be under center to start the game tonight.

He has been far from great, but you can’t just chalk it up to the Carolina QB’s play. The offense has been dreadful, and since he was sidelined with injury against the Niners at the beginning of October, Matt Rhule has been fired and Christian McCaffery has been dealt to San Francisco. He will start tonight on the sidelines, but how much freedom will P.J. Walker have with Mayfield waiting on the bench.

Patterson is back

The Falcons kept their heads above water without one of the best running backs in the NFL, Cordarrelle Patterson. He missed Week 5-8 after the Falcons the placed their running back on the injured reserve when he went down with a knee injury earlier this season. He returned last week and rushed for two TDs including this crunching run to give Atlanta the lead in the third quarter. Look for him to get more than the 13 carries he got last week against the Chargers.

The best of the worst?

The NFC South has without question been the worst division in football through the first half of the season. Carolina is 2-7 and sit just two games behind the division leading Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs and the Falcons are both 4-5, while the Saints sit in the middle of the pack at 3-6. This is a division that is almost certain not to get a wild card spot, so these division games will be worth their weight in gold.

Week 8 matchup

This is the second time the these two teams will meet in the last three weeks. In Week 8 the Falcons outlasted the Panthers in a shootout that went to overtime. There were almost 900 yards of total offense, and Carolina had their chances at a game winning field goal in regulation and in overtime to set up Younghoe Koo for the game winner in overtime. Are we in store for more late game dramatics under the light at Bank of America Stadium?

As if a divisonal game wasn't enough motivation, Jake Matthews and his wife just had a baby earlier today. He will be on cloud nine tonight, and there would be no better way to welcome the new baby to the world than a win tonight.

I've seen a lot of pregame get ups, but I don't think I have ever seen one this fresh. Chuba Hubbard is looking primetime ready. He will be looking to shine tonight under the lights of TNF.

Falcons last week

Atlanta had the game quite literally had the game in their hands at the end of the fourth quarter. It was a low scoring, defensive slugfest that came down to the wire at Mercedes Benz Stadium. With under two minutes left in the game, the Chargers were marching down the field when Austin Ekeler fumbled at the ATL 20 yard line, and Taquon Graham scooped up the ball heading the other way but then inexplicably fumbled giving the Chargers back the ball. The Falcons gifted the Chargers second life with 34 seconds left, and Cameron Dicker sunk Atlanta with a last second field goal from 37 yards out.

Carolina last week

The Panthers were demolished last week at the hands of a frustrated Cincinnati Bengals that was coming off of a pitiful performance the week before. The Panthers paid the price, giving up 35 first half points in a game they allowed 241 rushing yards, and five Joe Mixon touchdowns. P.J. Walker started at quarterback, but Baker Mayfield finished the game once the game was well out of hand. The former Cleveland QB led three TD drives in the second half, but they were little more than consolation scores in the 42-21 loss.

Hello everyone and welcome to Bank of America Stadium where two sub .500 teams will look to stay in the division race after very different starts to the season. The Panthers went out and got who they thought was their quarterback of the future during the offseason, but things have not gone according to plan for Baker Mayfield and the Panthers through the first half of the season.
