Chiefs vs Bengals: AFC Championship preview

This year’s AFC Championship game will be a rematch of last year’s title game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Cincinnati Bengals. Last year, it was the Bengals who won in a thrilling overtime victory that sent them on to Super Bowl LVI, where they lost to the Los Angeles Rams.

Of the last three meetings between superstar quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow, Burrow has come away victorious in all three matches by three points in each one.

Mahomes unfortunately injured his ankle in last week’s Divisional Round matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Despite the injury, he played on to beat the Jaguars 27-20 and send the Chiefs to the AFC title game. Meanwhile, Burrow easily led the Bengals in a 27-10 victory over the Bills.

Related: Mahomes’ injury status

On Monday, Chiefs coach Andy Reid confirmed that Mahomes’ injury is a high-ankle sprain, and though it’s concerning, in Mahomes’ mind, there’s no question he will play on Sunday against the Bengals. Interestingly, Mahomes plays best when he has to get the ball out under pressure, leading the NFL in EPA (expected points added) per dropback when he had under 2.5 seconds to throw.

The Bengals and Chiefs both boast ridiculously dominant offenses this season. The Chiefs lead the league with 29.2 points per game and the Bengals are just behind them with 28.3 points per game. The Bengals are on a 10-game winning streak and they and the Chiefs are in the top five in the NFL in third-down offense and red-zone offense.
