Carolina Panthers 19 vs 21 New York Giants summary: stats and highlights | NFL Preseason
Jake Luton went just 2/7 but started his night with this beautiful TD pass to Gary Jennings to bring the Panthers back in the game, but Carolina's comeback
The Panthers drought of seven quarters without a touchdown ended when Matt Corral woke the offense up and led them into the endzone with Raheem Blackshear's 8 yard TD. Corral went 9/13 for 71 yards after playing most of the second half.
Tyrod Taylor most likely secured his spot as the Giants back up, if there was any doubt before. He went 9/13 for 90 yards and this TD to Jalin Hyatt.
The Panthers offensive line has been a point of contention this preseason, and Young was under pressure along with the rest of the other Panthers QBs all night.
The Giants had a near perfect opening drive led by Daniel Jones who hit Daniel Bellinger on this four yard TD. Jones was 8/9 for 69 yards and a TD.

The Giants hold off the Panthers comeback bid and go to 1-1 on the preseason while Carolina drops to 0-2.

Luton looking for Vann on the post and the pass was batted down and should have been picked on fourth down.

Carolina finally score their first TD of the preseason after seven quarters! It's Blackshear who punches it in from a yard out to tighten the score early in the fourth quarter. The Two point conversion is no good as Corral looked for Vann who couldn't make the catch.
NY lead 21-12 with 13:37 to go in the fourth quarter.
Blackshear bouncing off tackles and almost gets to the goal line after a 6 yard gain.

Corral rolls right and finds Smith deep down the sideline for a 27 yard pitch and catch!

Corral takes off and cuts up the sideline for a 14 yard scramble on the final play of the 3rd quarter.
The Panthers are driving, and will have 1st and 10 from the NY 34 looking for their first touchdown of the preseason when we start the fourth quarter.

Nice pass from Corral to the right side finding Smith on the out route and the 14 yard pick up will keep the drive alive.

Blackshear broke one for 14 yards, but it's coming back after a holding penalty.

DeVito looked like he was dead in the dirt after an apparent sack but he spins out of it and picks up two yards.

Wright comes on and drills the FG from 53 yards out! He's the only source of offense for the Panthers tonight, and all preseason for that matter.

Young's short shift
Bryce Young played two possessions, going three and out in the first series, but led a FG drive on the second trip down field. He finished the day 3/6 with 35 yards and got sacked once.
NY's defense made some mistakes early on but they made some big plays to keep the Panthers offense out of the end zone.
Hyatt had just dropped a pass on the previous play, but Taylor hung one up and let his WR go get it. The rookie chased it down for his first TD in the NFL.
The Panthers O line has been torn up for the first six quarters of the preseason, and Bryce Young has had to pay for many of those lapses on the line.
Jones played just one drive, but he went 8/9 and hit his new TE Waller three times before finding Bellinger for the opening TD.

The Panthers get on the board with Wrights 37 yard field goal! The Giants committed some penalties that helped Carolina down the field but then the Panthers kept going backwards once in the red zone.

Chark with the catch over the middle and took it up the left sideline for 13 yards and that will make the FG attempt a little easier.

Jones faked the pitch to the right, turned and looped it up for Bellinger for a 4 yard TD!!! What an opening drive from Daniel Jones and the Giants! He hit his new TE Waller on more than one occasion, and you can see those two already have a connection.

Jones felt the pressure, and tucked it and ran for 8 yards before running out of bounds on the right side.

Hyatt gets eaten up on the pitch play which loses three yards.

Jones back to the air, this time to Campbell over the middle for 13 yards and another first down!

Jones going back to Waller on the crossing pattern but the big TE had it jarred out of his hands.

O-line under the microscope in Carolina
Frank Reich is an Offensive minded coach, and he knows to have a good offense you need a good offensive line. No one will be more upset at the way the quarterbacks were protected last week than the man with the clip board. Last week the Panthers gave up five sacks and allowed countless other pass rushes that stagnated the offenses against the Jets. There has been no starter named for Week 1 in Carolina, but Frank Reich will be hesitant to throw his rookie QB into the fire if the line isn’t ready to block for him.
Saquon is suited up
Another guy we might get a little look at is Saquon Barkley, who is dressed and participating in warm ups. New York’s start running back was on the verge of a sticky hold out until conceding to the franchise and signing a one year tender agreement to keep in the Big Apple for at least another year. He was expecting a long term, big money deal but the Giants weren’t willing to cough up the cash this year. He is in a contract year, which means he’s unlikely to get too many snaps tonight, but we might see him for a series or two.
Waller's new home
New acquistion Darren Waller will be making his New York debut today in front of his new home fans. If the Giants find success this season, it will have a lot to do with the chemistry between the tight end and QB Daniel Jones. He was a stud for the Raiders for the last seven years and now has a chance to shine on the biggest stage in the world, NYC.
Carolina in the building
All the talk tonight will be centered around Bryce Young, but Shaq Thompson and the Panthers defense will be wanting to perform better than they did in the shutout loss to the Jets last week.
Young's second time around
The rookie quarterback who has been entrusted with the future of the franchise in Carolina got the start in his preseason debut in Carolina. There hasn’t been much stability at the QB position in Charlotte over the last few years, and there is plenty of pressure on the shoulders of the first year gun slinger. His 21 yards on 4/6 passing wasn’t a great measurer of how he is developing in the Panthers offense, especially considering how much pressure he was under for the first two drives against the Jets. Tonight we should get a better look at Young, who will be trying to put the Panthers in the end zone for the first time this preseason.
DJs big deal
You can look at the situation Daniel Jones is in entering this season and think, “Hey, he got that big contract. The pressure is off now.” That couldn’t be farther from the truth. Now that he got paid New Yorkers will become even more demanding of their quarterback. He has been looking to recreate the magic from his first year as a starter when he threw 24 TDs and 12 picks. While he did keep the INTs down to just 5 last season, he threw 15 TDs which isn’t enough in the Big Apple. There is a good chance he will play tonight against his childhood team as the first teamers look to gear up for the regular season.
Giants last game
There was no Daniel Jones or Saquon Barkley or any of the big names featured in the Giants preseason opener from Detroit last week. Instead it was a chance to get a look at undrafted rookie QB Tommy DeVito and some other guys down the depth chart. Tyrod Taylor led two drives that ended in field goals to start the game as the Giants defense came out looking strong, and then DeVito put the Giants in the end zone with a 14 yard TD pass to Tommy Sweeny just before halftime following a defensive take away. The Giants would lose control of their 13-3 lead in the second half after a 96 yard punt return early in the third quarter, and end up losing on a QB sneak with under two minutes to play in the fourth. DeVito had a chance to play hero late, but threw an interception on 4th and 14 and the Lions held on for a 21-16 win.
Panthers last game
It’s preseason, so we don’t get too up for a win or too down for a loss, but getting shutout is never a good sign. Bryce Young did just fine in the short time he played, but there were some serious questions raised about the offensive line that continued to allow pressure on their quarterbacks as the running game gained just 48 yards on the ground. The defense gave up over 300 yards of offense which is understandable in preseason, especially at the end of the game. It’s a newly formed team with a rookie QB, and a coach that is still trying to integrate his system from the top to bottom. Few teams need preseason games more than the Panthers.
