Cowboys fall to Chargers in final preseason game: Summary and thoughts
The Trey Lance experiment comes to an end
The Cowboys' final preseason game was in many ways meant to be an evaluation of QB Trey Lance, who had a disappointing first game and a pretty decent second game.
This one, however, just highlighted the inconsistencies. He had enough bright spots to stay on the 53-man roster, which was never really a question, but enough mistakes that he’ll remain behind Cooper Rush on the depth chart. Lance played the entire game against the Chargers and finished 33-of-49 for 323 yards, one touchdown pass to WR Ryan Flournoy, and one 46-yard rushing touchdown, and five picks. He also flopped on several chances to convert on third down.
The other Cowboys position battles
For Flournoy, there is good news. The rookie is still making his case to be on the final 53-man roster next week and he finished this game with three receptions for 30 yards and one touchdown. He had a score last week against the Raiders too, so his chances are looking better, but there are a lot of others still ahead of him. The Cowboys will need to be okay keeping six WRs on the roster.
Running backs Deuce Vaughn, Royce Freeman, and Malik Davis are battling for the RB4 spot and Vaughn led the way against the Chargers with nine carries for 53 yards. Freeman had a decent game as well, finishing with eight carries for 35 yards. Davis struggled the most, getting sacked in the first half and flagged for holding in the second, and finishing with just five carries for 28 yards.
Chargers offense finally gets going
For the Chargers, it was a nice change to finally see a win and some movement on the offense. Backup QB Easton Stick played the whole game and finished the game 12-of-29 for 170 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. They aren’t great stats, but better than they have been at least. Let’s just say, we hope Justin Herbert stays healthy.
Wide receivers Derius Davis and Simi Fehoko had the biggest plays of the offense. Davis ran 70 yards for a touchdown on the Chargers’ first play of the game, and Fehoko caught a 78-yard touchdown pass.
Chargers' electric defense
The Chargers defense did well, with safety Tony Jefferson finishing with 14 total tackles, 11 solos, one sack, one tackle for a loss, one sack, one QB hit, and two interceptions for 22 yards. The other defenders who caught Lance’s interceptions were linebacker Tre’Mon Morris-Brash, who ran it 25 yards into the end zone for the pick six, and cornerbacks Matt Hankins and Robert Kennedy.
And the final Trey Lance interception
This was the Cowboys' last chance to make a comeback, and this is what happened with 7 seconds on the clock.

We're just moments away from game time here at AT&T Stadium!
Justin Herbert will sit this one out...as always
When I say as always, I literally mean always. Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has never played a single NFL preseason game in his entire career.
He was drafted in 2020, a year when there were no preseason games. After that, former head coach Brandon Staley rested al his starters, including Herbert.
Although new coach Jim Harbaugh is more open to letting starters play in the preseason, Herbert has been dealing with an injury until this week. He was in a walking boot for two weeks due to a plantar fascia injury. He returned to practice on Monday, but he will not play against the Cowboys today.
Harbaugh announced backup QB Easton Stick as the starter for today's game against the Cowboys, opting to play it safe with Herbert so that he'll be ready to start Week 1 of the regular season when the Chargers host the Raiders on Sunday, September 8.
Stick is in a battle of the backup position with Luis Perez, and so far neither one has shown that they deserve the spot. Today is the last chance for them to prove themselves. Though Herbert is back and healthy, the backup position should not be underestimated.
Chargers player to watch: Junior Colson
Rookie linebacker Junior Colson was the Chargers' third-round pick in the draft this year. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to see much of him as he's been recovering from an appendectomy.
He returned to the practice field last week though and immediately impressed with his speed and ability to read a screen pass. Though Denzel Perryman and Daiyan Henley have already been named the Chargers' starting linebackers, Colson could have a starting spot on the special teams unit or as a defensive backup.
Today could be his chance to show off what he can do under the bright lights.
Trey Lance will play entire game
The Dallas Cowboys traded for Trey Lance after the preseason ended last year, so we never got a chance to see him play, as he sat on the bench throughout the whole regular season.
Now, he's played in two preseason games and it looks like Dallas is ready to keep him on the roster no matter what. In the first game, he struggled to make passes and didn't do much to impress. But he made up for it in Week 2, completing 15 of 23 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown and adding 36 rushing yards and another touchdown on the ground.
While Jerry Jones confirmed Lance will be on the 53-man roster, the question now is whether or not he'll surpass Cooper Rush for the QB2 spot behind Prescott.
Today's game against the Chargers could determine that.
Chargers players rescued from broken elevator
On Friday night, 15 Chargers players and staff went through a scary moment when they got stuck on an elevator in their hotel in Dallas. A technician attempted to get the elevator working, but was unsuccessful.
Thankfully, the Dallas Fire-Rescue showed up to help. They ended up having to crawl one-by-one through a ceiling panel to get out. They reported that the elevator got stuck in a "blind shaft" between the 3rd and 15th floors.
After they'd made it out, Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh invited the Dallas Fire-Rescue team to eat with them. Everyone is okay and ready for the game against the Cowboys this afternoon.
The Cowboys are not planning to start QB Dak Prescott today against the Chargers, but he could play another role...
More on the Dallas Cowboys vs Los Angeles Chargers:
Cowboys and Chargers - where they stand
With two preseason games under their belts, here's where the Cowboys and Chargers stand heading into the finale.
Dallas Cowboys this preseason
The Dallas Cowboys are fresh off a road win over the Las Vegas Raidersin preseason Week 2. They saw major improvements from their rookies and backups from their preseason opener, which they lost to the Los Angeles Rams.
Quarterback Trey Lance is making the case to be the QB2 behind Dak Prescott, which will likely push Cooper Rush to the emergency QB3 spot once the 53-man roster is made final next week. Rookies O Tyler Guyton and C Cooper Beebe have both played well this preseason, giving Dallas hope that they made good decisions in this year's draft.
The Cowboys ended last season with a 12-5 record and first in the NFC East, but had a disappointing playoff exit when they lost to the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card Round.
Los Angeles Chargers this preseason
The Los Angeles Chargers have yet to win a preseason game, losing to the Seattle Seahawks and LA Rams. They have struggled to get anything done on offense this preseason.
With quarterback Justin Herbert recovering from an injury, they've had their backups in, one of whom (Max Duggan) they've already released. That leaves Easton Stick and Luis Perez, who have yet to throw a touchdown pass in the preseason.
The Chargers finished the regular season last year with a 5-12 record and last in the AFC West. They were eliminated from playoff contention after Week 16. They've since made some major changes, including hiring head coach Jim Harbaugh and drafting rookies OT Joe Alt and WR Ladd McConkey, two crucial positions for the Chargers.
