Update:

This year, the NFL’s free agency period officially opened on March 12 at 4 p.m. ET, which was when teams could start making deals with free agents official. However, two days before that, on March 10, the league opened it’s “legal tampering period”, during which players' agents could start negotiating deals with teams, which would then become official once free agency hit two days later.

Even still, a few NFL teams are under fire for negotiating with players before the legal tampering period, one of which is the Kansas City Chiefs, who lost Super Bowl LIX to the Philadelphia Eagles just last month.

Chiefs and two other teams in potential legal trouble with NFL

The Chiefs, Washington Commanders, and New England Patriots are all in hot water for the same pursuit - offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported that all three teams offered Stanley a contract matching the Baltimore Ravens' offer of three years for $60 million. The Commanders were even rumored to have offered him over $24 million a year.

The Chiefs have been looking to boost their o-line after struggling in the Super Bowl against the Eagles defense. They ended up signing left tackle Jaylon Moore as a free agent. The Commanders traded for All-Pro tackle Laremy Tunsil, and the Patriots signed Morgan Moses.

If the Chiefs, Commanders, and Patriots are found guilty of violating the league’s no-tampering rule, it could have severe consequences, including loss of draft picks, hefty fines, and even suspension of team executives.
