Chiefs bring in former player to replace injured quarterbacks: Who is Shane Buechele?
With back-to-back injuries to Patrick Mahomes and Gardner Minshew, the Kansas City Chiefs are in need of a QB to see out the 2025 season.
The Kansas City Chiefs have endured a torrid 2025 campaign and were eliminated from playoff contention long before the end of the regular season.
Following a run of five Super Bowl appearances in six years, this season has been tough for the Chiefs and it won’t get any easier in the remaining two games. Facing an injury crisis at quarterback, Kansas City have moved to bring in Shane Buechele from the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad.
The 27-year-old QB first signed with the Chiefs in 2021, joining as an undrafted free agent. He remained with the Chiefs through 2021 and 2022 but did not make an NFL appearance. He joined the Bills in 2023 and remained with the team until 2025, before moving back to the Chiefs.
Buechele has never made it to the field in an NFL game but looks set to lead the Chiefs’ offense through the final two games of the 2025 season. He will have some knowledge of the team’s offensive plays and will be a short-term solution to the QB crisis in Kansas City
The Chiefs suffered a major blow when Patrick Mahomes suffered a torn ACL in the Week 15 loss to the Las Angeles Chargers. Following that injury backup quarterback Gardner Minshew started against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday but he too picked up an injury and the team turned to Chris Oladokun, previously the No. 3 option at QB. Buechele is expected to replace him for the final games of this season.
