Cowboys’ Jones says no urgency to add wide receiver despite injuries
The Dallas Cowboys lost James Washington to a broken foot on Monday, but Jerry Jones says the franchise is in no rush to strengthen at WR.
With Michael Gallup recovering from a torn ACL and Amari Cooper now at the Cleveland Browns after leaving in an offseason trade, the Dallas Cowboys bolstered their options at wide receiver in free agency, bringing in former Pittsburgh Steeler James Washington.
Washington injury “doesn’t create an urgency for us” - Jones
Washington now won’t be ready for the start of the regular season after suffering a broken foot during practice on Monday, but despite the Cowboys’ injury absences at WR, franchise owner and general manager Jerry Jones doesn’t believe Dallas need to recruit any further players in the position.
“It doesn’t create an urgency for us at a veteran receiver,“Jones said after practice on Tuesday. “We like these young guys.”
Without Washington and Gallup, the Cowboys have CeeDee Lamb, Jalen Tolbert, Simi Fehoko, Noah Brown, Brandon Smith, KaVontae Turpin and TJ Vasher at wide receiver. Lamb is now at a point where he is ready to become WR1 and Tolbert was acquired in the third round of the 2022 Draft to fight for opportunities with Gallup and Brown.

McCarthy on the same page as Cowboys chief
Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said on Tuesday that it isn’t his goal to find a veteran replacement at WR, as he expects the young players to continue developing during the rest of training camp.
“[In] our wide receiver group, even going into this camp by design we wanted to make sure we’re giving all these young guys an opportunity […],” McCarthy told reporters. “I think you’ll definitely see these young guys improve with those opportunities.”
