Eagles maintain NFC East superiority

The Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys game had all the drama you could ask for as they went back and forth until the very end, a thrilling finish that saw Philadelphia hold on to the lead and beat Dallas 28-23.

Hurts battled through injury

Just as the Cowboys were able to maintain a lead after a sack on Jalen Hurts, the Eagles QB hobbled off as his left knee took a direct hit just before halftime. He came right back on though and in the second half, started it off with two touchdown passes and ended the game with 207 yards and two touchdowns plus a tush push TD.

Nailbiter of a game

The Eagles started off the score with a touchdown by Gainwell and Dallas immediately answered with a touchdown of their own by Ferguson.  The Cowboys then took the lead on a Turpin TD and the Eagles evened the score again on a Hurts TD, result of the ever-controversial tush push. It was the Cowboys who led at halftime after an Aubrey field goal put them up by 3. The Eagles had another chance to score but Hurts was sacked by Parsons and looked to be hurt after the hit by Lawrence to the knee.

In the second half, the Cowboys struggled to keep up and Hurts looked just fine. Dallas ended up down 28-17 after the Eagles scored two touchdowns by Smith and Brown. Their defense kept the Cowboys from scoring when they stopped Prescott with a flip by Cunningham at the 1-yard line on 4th down. A pass to Schoonmaker in the end zone was initially called a touchdown but was finally overturned and ruled just an inch short as his knee was down.

The Cowboys were able to recover from the deficit with a touchdown pass to Tolbert, but failed to make a 2-point conversion attempt and that's where it all went downhill for Dallas. There was still 6:23 left in the game when they went for 2 and looked like they got it when Prescott ran it into the end zone, but it was reviewed and showed that he stepped out of bounds, keeping it a 5-point game at 28-23. The Cowboys then had two more opportunities to score after holding the Eagles to back-to-back three and outs, but failed to do so with several penalties in the way and a few defining mistakes.

The pivotal finish

In the end, the Cowboys had a chance to pull off a comeback. After Prescott was sacked not once, but twice by Graham and Carter for a combined loss of 11 yards, they went for it on 4th and 8, but were stopped. They then held off the Eagles and ended up needing just 86 yards in a doable 46 seconds and the Eagles easily gave them 56 of those with penalties. The Cowboys were at the 6, but instead of scoring the winning TD, Prescott was sacked again, keeping the clock moving and pulling a hurry-up spike. They ended up at 3rd and 21 with five seconds left and Prescott's pass to Lamb was not enough to get the score. They fell to 5-3 and the Eagles became the only team to have an 8-1 record in the league.

Next up

The Cowboys will host the New York Giants for yet another NFC East battle on Sunday next week.

The Eagles will have their bye week next week before heading to Kansas City for Monday Night Football where they'll meet their 2022 Super Bowl nemesis in hopes of revenge.

EAGLES WIN

Prescott pass was complete to Lamb but he was short of the end zone and fumbled it at the end anyway. Eagles will take the win and maintain their supremacy in the NFC East as the Cowboys lose by 5 points after several mistakes and missed opportunities.

EAGLES 28 - COWBOYS 23

Cowboys FINALLY got into the end zone after a mess of penalties and a turnover on downs. It was a Prescott pass to Tolbert for 7 yards in the end zone that got the touchdown.

They tried to go for 2 and it was initially ruled a success when Prescott ran it into the end zone, but the review showed he stepped out of bounds. Attempt was ruled a fail and it's now a one-possession game with the Eagles in the lead with just 6:23 to go.

Then it was the 29-yard catch by WR CeeDee Lamb to set up the touchdown drive. It was a Prescott 4-yard pass to TE Jake Ferguson in the end zone and Aubrey's PAT was good.

Madden predicts Cowboys beat Eagles

Madden predicts a Cowboys 28-10 victory over their NFC East rivals.

That doesn't mean anything at all of course. Madden's predictions haven't been all that accurate so far this season.

Madden Cowboys predictions vs actual result:

Week 1: Madden predicted Cowboys beat Giants 23-20, Cowboys won 40-0

Week 2: Madden predicted Cowboys beat Jets 27-14, Cowboys won 30-10

Week 3: Madden predicted Cowboys beat Cardinals 14-7, Cowboys lost 28-16

Week 4: Madden predicted Cowboys beat Patriots 41-14, Cowboys won 38-3

Week 5: Madden predicted Cowboys beat Niners, 27-19, Cowboys lost 42-10

Week 6: Madden predicted Cowboys lose to Chargers, 21-17, Cowboys won 20-17

Week 8: Madden predicted Cowboys lose to Rams, 30-27, Cowboys won 43-20

To be fair, the Cowboys can be unpredictable and all over the place. A win over the Eagles is a tough ask, and as comfortable a win as Madden is predicting seems unlikely. But anything can happen in the NFL.

Jennifer Bubel

Hurts vs Prescott

Interestingly, we've only seen these two start against each other once before.

Jennifer Bubel

Lamb: a weapon of Dallas' own

The Eagles have their weapon in AJ Brown and the Cowboys have theirs in their own receiver, CeeDeeLamb. As they've started to get him the ball more, they've seen it pay off immediately. Against the Chargers, Lamb had seven receptions for 112 yards andagainsttheRamshe had 12 receptions for 158 yards and two touchdowns.

Last year against the Eagles, Lamb had 15 catches for 188 yards and two touchdowns. He could easily take advantage of a vulnerable Eagles defense, which has been switching out safeties and corners all season after a slew of injuries.

Jennifer Bubel

INACTIVES for Cowboys vs Eagles

The Eagles and Cowboys have released their list of inactives for today's game.

Philadelphia Eagles Inactives

- QB Tanner McKee

- CB Bradley Roby

- RB Boston Scott

- DT Moro Ojomo

- TE Grant Calcaterra

- DE Derek Barnett

Dallas Cowboys Inactives

- QB Trey Lance

- CB Noah Igbinoghene

- CB Eric Scott

- RB Deuce Vaughn

- WR Jalen Brooks

- DL Villiami Fehoko

Jennifer Bubel

Can the Cowboys stop AJ Brown?

Stopping Eagles wide receiver AJBrown is going to be key in the Cowboys upsetting Philly. He's had at LEAST 125 yards in the last six games and added eight grabs for 130 yards and two touchdowns in last week's win over the Commanders. He's been the Eagles' clutch player, making big plays in significant moments.

Since losing Trevon Diggs, the Cowboys have been counting on DaRon Bland to fill the cornerback position and he has delivered. He already has three interception returns for a touchdown this season. If he can make that kind of play against the Eagles and Micah Parsons can stop Jalen Hurts, the Cowboys might have a chance to stop Brown from making those big, difference-making plays.

Jennifer Bubel

What's the status on Jalen Hurts' knee injury??

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts might not want to talk about his knee injury, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

What he's dealing with (and has been for a month now) is a bone bruise, which could be a small fracture on the outer layer of the bone. While it must be painful, it doesn't seem to have affected him too much except for the fact that he's running less.

“If anything, he’s probably being smarter,” said Cowboys LB Parsons. “He’s sliding a lot more now, not trying to gain extra yards, just getting what he can, getting into manageable positions and things like that. He’s not trying to force out of sacks. He’s been playing really smart.”

Jennifer Bubel

NFC East battle

Today's NFC East rivalry game is a battle between two of the best offenses in the league. The 7-1 Eagles host the 5-2 Cowboys, with both teams having won their last two games and both teams looking to stay undefeated in the division.

Eagles offense...

Although Dallas has one of the best defenses in the league, they'll be put to the test against the Eagles offense. Wide receiver AJ Brown has had more than 125 receiving yards in six straight games and running back D'Andre Swift is on the verge of a career record in rushing yards. Quarterback Jalen Hurts, however, has been struggling with interceptions this season, finally going one game without throwing one since Week 4 last week. They are at the top of the NFC East and are at 7-1 with their only loss coming against the Jets of all teams, in Week 6.

vs Dallas defense

The Cowboys are at 5-2 after losing to the Cardinals and 49ers and are second in the division. They are coming off of a huge win against the Rams, in which they scored a season-high 43 points and quarterback Dak Prescott had his first 300+ yard game. The defense still ranks in the top five in points allowed per game, yards allowed per game, and total takeaways. They will need to stop Micah Parsons, who has eight tackles and two for a loss plus 0.5 quarterback sacks against the Eagles in just three games. DeMarcus Lawrence has three QB sacks, 10 QB hits, and 10 tackles for a loss in 16 games against the Eagles. If they want to win, it starts with getting past those two.
