Dak Prescott frees up Cowboys’ salary cap
Dallas quarterback agrees to contract modification, just like CeeDee Lamb, to free up salary cap space for the Cowboys.

The Dallas Cowboys were in a bind regarding the salary cap heading into the 2025 NFL season. The team’s stars did what was necessary and restructured their contracts. First was wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, and now quarterback Dak Prescott.

The America’s Team restructured Prescott’s contract, creating $36.6 million in cap space. According to ESPN, the Cowboys converted $45.75 million of his base salary into a signing bonus.

With this move, they added three empty contract years, reducing Prescott’s salary for 2025 to just $2 million, and decreased the QB’s cap hit to only $53.29 million. The Mississippi State graduate will remain on the Cowboys’ books until 2032, although his contract is scheduled to end after the 2028 season.
Jerry Jones doesn’t promise to add players during free agency
The Cowboys were criticized before the 2024 season for not making major moves during the previous offseason, and it seems that will be the plan heading into the 2025 campaign. Jerry Jones, the owner of the Texas team, stated that he doesn’t see free agency as the place to fill the roster gaps, as he also has the Draft to work with and wants to retain his own free agents.

“I’m not looking at free agency as a place to fill gaps,” said the Cowboys owner. “Not if you include what we’ll do in the Draft and what we’re doing with our own roster regarding who we want to retain.”
The Cowboys have 20 players whose contracts will expire after the 2024 season, according to Spotrac. Among them, the most important are wide receiver Brandin Cooks, defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, punter Bryan Anger, linebacker Eric Kendricks, and running back Rico Dowdle.
