Dallas Cowboys 2022 preseason round-up: McCarthy, Zack Martin, Prescott…

Find out why former Cowboys WR Drew Pearson thinks the Cowboys coach is on the hot seat and is a trade for DK Metcalf possible?

Update:

Drew Pearson says coach Mike McCarthy is on the “hot seat”

Former Cowboys wide receiver and NFL hall of famer Drew Pearson spoke on a sports podcast called The Zach Gelb Show to discuss the Cowboys coming into this season. During the show, he commented that Mike McCarthy is on the “hot seat”. Pearson said McCarthy so much as admitted that he didn’t prepare the team well for the playoff game against the 49ers last season, which they lost in the sloppiest of manners. “I think going into this season, he has something to prove,” said Pearson of McCarthy.

“Since Mr Jones hasn’t gotten any younger, he wants to win now and if McCarthy isn’t the guy to do it, they’ll have to make some decisions, but it won’t be until the end of the season.”

Pearson also touched on the possibility of Sean Payton coming to coach the Cowboys in the future, saying “a lot of the stage is continuing to be set for that”. Jerry Jones dismissed the idea after Payton left the Saints in January and made it clear McCarthy would return in 2022. Pearson said if McCarthy doesn’t live up to the expectations, Payton could be “the next thing” for the Cowboys in 2023.

“McCarthy’s got to be the man in charge, he’s got to take charge, and the players have to show confidence in him and want to play for him and I think this year will be that year because we made Sean Payton wait in the wings there and he always wanted to be the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Sometimes you have to take the long way around to get where you want to get and that might be his path.

Zack Martin ranked as 2nd best interior OL by NFL members

Cowboys guard Zack Martin allowed just three sacks in 1,036 snaps last season and had a pass block win rate of 94.7% and run block win rate of 72.4%, putting him in the top 10 among guards. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler paneled over 50 NFL executives, coaches, scouts, and players to find out who the top 10 guards are in the NFL. Martin was number two on the list, just barely falling behind the Indianapolis Colts’ Quenton Nelson.

Could the Cowboys trade for DK Metcalf?

DK Metcalf has made it known that he wants a new contract. He sat out at Seattle’s three-day minicamp in June, hoping for a contract that would make him one of the highest-paid receivers. He’s got a point. Metcalf’s market value is $22 million a year for four seasons, but he’s only set to receive $4 million for next season. The Cowboys currently have over $20 million in cap space and several 2023 draft picks. This is something the Cowboys could and should take advantage of. They have just a few weeks left to sign free agents and make trades before the start of training camp.

Dak Prescott giving “Tom Brady vibes”

NFL Network host Rachel Bonnetta said Dak Prescott is giving her “Tom Brady vibes”. The reason? Prescott’s comments on being in the best shape of his life. There’s been a lot of talk about how this comment from Prescott is different than when other players say it. It’s true that we hear that kind of thing every year from several players. What made some take Prescott’s comment more seriously was his follow-up comments on how he’s taking preventative measures to take care of his body. Bonnetta points out the similarities in Prescott and Brady as far as his diet and how he’s putting in the work before his body breaks down. “We could see a totally different Dak Prescott this season,” she said. “Absolutely jacked, eating only avocados.”
