France and Morocco came into this tournament ranked in the FIFA top ten and have made it to the last eight of the competition but today only one moves on.

Show key events only

On the ensuing corner kick, it was Upamecano getting a head to the corner kick on the back post and Bono again was there to block it away.

It's all square after 45 minutes. France came out strong and went after the game from the very first kick. It was awfully one sided in the opening half, but France couldn't get much going after this Mbappe effort in the first five minutes.

HT

WE ARE HEADING TO THE HALFTIME BREAK FROM BOSTON!!!

45+5"

Hakimi with the right foot from the right side and that went nowhere near the frame.

45+5'

Brahim has a hopeful shot from outside the area and it hit Rabiot in the hand. Free kick coming from a really dangerous area.

45+4'

Demeble charging into the box and he tried to make a move around a defender but Salah-Eddine held strong and stopped that attack in it's tracks.

45+2'

Digne with a long distance effort that was curving away from Bono. He might have got a touch but it hit off the crossbar and went out for a goal kick;.

45+1'

France passing the ball around the area, but couldn't penetrate this back line. Kone settled and had a go at goal but that was saved by Bono.

45'

FIVE MINUTES OF STOPPAGE TIME!!!

44'

Morocco have done so well for the first 43 minutes of this game, but they can't let in a cheap goal before the break. That would really change the game in the 2nd half.

42'

The momentum of the match graphic just came up and unsurprisingly it was extremely one sided. Just a couple of small spikes for Morocco, but it's been all France so far.

40'

Talbi gets to the end line and tries to put in a cross from the far side but that pass was blocked away by Salba.

38'

Olise was clipped by Al  Aynaoui as he tried to poke the ball away and the Morocco player was lucky to get away with no yellow.

36'

Olise puts it into the middle on the corner and Kounde was there but got a weak touch on the ball with his head and that bounced wide of target.

35'

Doue with a take away in the middle of the park and he had a 3 vs. 3 counter. The seas parted and he took the shot on from the top of the area but Bono was there for the one handed save again!

34'

Morocco have to figure out a way to put some pressure on the other goal. Maignan has not had to do anything so far. It's been a tea part in Boston for the French keeper.

32'

Dembele on the left side, he cuts back on a defender into the middle and looks to curl it into the back post but that was well wide of the target.

But he couldn't convert the penalty after a long wait that might have just thrown him off. The review took a long time, and the take was sub par for Mbappe.

Mbappe earned the penalty.

28'

WE ARE AT THE HYDRATION BREAK HERE FROM BOSTON!!!

28'

PENALTY SAVED!!!!

Mbappe put it low and to the right side but Bono guessed right and wrapped it up!!! How much did that wait come into play for Mbappe?

There was long wait as the penalty was getting review. Now its officially a penalty. But what a long wait for Mbappe.

PENALTY!!!

France his Morocco on the break and it's Mbappe getting into the box, with a step over which Mazroui fell for and the ref points to the spot!!! Mbappe will step up to take it.

24'

Brahims ball to the back post is cleared away by Saliba and a rare chance to put the ball in a dangerous spot goes to waste.

23'

Ounahi wins the ball back in the midfield and Hackimi earns a corner kick.

23'

France are looking a little frustrated, and there are some boos ringing around the stadium here in Boston. Not sure if they are France fans or Morocco fans but if you are a Morocco fan you have to be pretty happy with how the game is going.

20'

Corner kick for France and Rabiot got a head to it but skied it over the frame once again.

Doue on the near side, peeks his head up and spots Dembele on the back post. The Ballon d'Or winner got a head to it but couldn't keep the effort down.

17'

France is dominating the possession, but they really aren't doing a lot with it. This Morocco side can defend when they need to and they are showing it.

16'

Brahim tripped up on the right touchline, and their free kick is taken but blown over the back post and out for a goal kick.

15'

Bono playing with fire in the back with Mbappe closing down, but he did just slide it by the Frenchman and avoid the danger.

15'

Olise sends it in and that was easily cleared by Morocco's back line.

14'

Free kick coming after Olise was tripped up just outside of shooting distance.

14'

Morocco are holding a tight line and making sure that France don't find any space with those balls in behind for Mbappe. They will look to break on the counter, but right now they are absorbing the attack.

Upamecano with a header on the back post and France had two goal scoring chances in the first 5 minutes of the match.

Early effort from Mbappe that was blocked off by Bono.

10'

Doue driving down the left side, and he had the ball poked away by Bouaddi who was tracking back making sure this four headed monster didn't get the first goal before the 10 minute mark.

7'

Morocco trying to take some of the sting out of this match early on. France came out firing and they know that if they have the ball, France can't do anything with it.

6'

Morocco have been on the back foot for the last few minutes. This game is going to be a roller coaster of control. France will have their spat. So will Morocco. No need to get too down or too up if your a fan of either side.

5'

On the corner it was Upamecano nodding it on frame on the back post and he that header was pushed away by Bono. Two shots. Two stops for the Morocco keeper.

4'

Mbappe with the first chance from the top of the area. Doue played him from the left side. He took a touch and laced it on goal but Bono saved it and pushed it out for a corner.

3'

Brahim with a nice bit of skill around a France defender that provokes a nice roar from the Moroccan fans in Boston.

2'

We have to think this is going to be an open, free flowing game with two attacking teams, but the Morocco and Brazil game was 1-1 and didn't have as many chances as you would think.

1'

WE ARE UNDERWAY FROM BOSTON!!!

The teams are out on the pitch and the anthems are being played. It's almost time to kickoff the quarterfinals from Boston!!!

This is Deschamps last World Cup, and could be his last game with the France national team. He has been one of the most successful coaches not just in France history but in international history.

The favorites are out on the pitch

They are just about everyone's favorite to win the World Cup. It's a blessing, but it could also be a curse. If you don't live up to expectations things can go south awfully quick.

This is the first of the four quarterfinal matches to come over the next few days. Four teams will go through and four teams will be going to the semis. We find out for first semifinalist today from Boston.

What is France’s record against Morocco? All-time head-to-head record ahead of 2026 World Cup quarterfinals

Who has the edge in what has been a blossoming rivalry? Our Andy Hall has all the details of which side has had the most success in this rivalry.

France vs Morocco: Why six players born in France are representing the Atlas Lions

Moroccans from France

Players playing for different countries from where they were born is nothing new. It's been happening for a long time, for lots of different teams. Morocco is no different. They have six players that were born in France that could have been lining up on the opposite side of the pitch.

Xavier Rousseau, the France chef in charge of Mbappé’s diet: “The key is creating smart cuisine”

Mbappe's secret ingredient

Outside of the top notch talent, and peak physique and an insatiable hunger for goals and for glory Kylian Mbappe is also a very healthy eater. Meet Xavier Rousseau, the Frenchman's chef. Our Andres Onrubia has more.

Michael Olise faces huge semi-final risk for France against Morocco

Olise at risk

Michael Olise is in a spot of bother coming into this match. He picked up a yellow card against Paraguay and now has to be on his best behavior against Morocco today. Our Callum Roche has more.

French feeling right at home

For a World Cup that has been spread out over three countries, with teams and fans having to long thousands of miles in air travel, France has had a pretty light schedule. They have had to play games between Philadelphia, New England, and New York/New Jersey. Anyone who has traveled in the northeast knows that is a very fortunate travel path.

Real Madrid confirms Tchouaméni future with major contract call

Tchouameni staying at Madrid

Aurelien Tchouameni is not in the starting XI as he continues to deal with a thigh injury but he is on the bench and it looks as though he is going to be at Real Madrid for quite a long time. Our Jose Felix Diaz has more.

Where we are

We are here in Foxborough and this is a town that knows a thing or two about winning. This stadium usually serves as home to the New England Patriots and in just about two months the NFL season will be underway. Until then, the beautiful game has taken over here in Boston and there will be some champions on the pitch today, which is no strange sight for the fans here in Boston.

Reaction from Mbappe

The reaction from Mbappe was swift and it was brilliant. While his retort was elegant and well thought out, the senator from Paraguay called for him to apologize and threatened legal action. Mbappe has much better things to do than to worry about some bozo thousands of miles away but he did make sure to whip up a swift, smart response that only seemed to anger the senator more.

Morocco XI

Mohamed Ouahbi has his XI out for Morocco's second straight quarterfinal appearance in the World Cup. It’s Bono, Hakimi, Mazraoui, Bouaddi, Talbi, Ounahi, Diaz, Issa Diop, El Khannouss, El Aynaoui and Salah-Eddine

Racism stains World Cup

Kylian Mbappe was the victim of a racist comment after his penalty made the difference against Paraguay. He came under attack from a Paraguayan senator, who made despicable remarks about him and the French team, and then there were Paraguay supporters seen burning a figure with an Mbappe shirt on. It was the ugliest part of what has been a fantastic World Cup so far, and France's Minister of Sport Marina Ferrari called for an end to the violence.

France Starting XI

Didier Deschamps has his XI for the quarterfinal against Morocco. It's Maignan in goal with Kounde, Upamecano, Saliba and Digne in the back. Kone and Rabiot will be in the middle with Olise, Doue, Dembele and Mbappe up top.

FIFA

FIFA RANKINGS

Let’s take a look at the ever changing FIFA Standings heading into the quarterfinal. France has officially overtaken Argentina after last round. France struggled against Paraguay, but Argentina have eeked by both Cabo Verde and Egypt in the knockout rounds. Spain are in third with England right behind and Morocco are sitting in sixth behind Brazil who are already knocked out of the tournament. Six of the top ten teams are left in the the final eight of the tournament, with Norway and Switzerland making surprise runs to the quarters..

All time scoring list

We aren't just in the midst of a Golden Boot race. The chase for history is on in this World Cup. Lionel Messi broke Miroslav Klose’s all time record for goals in a World Cup when he put in his 17th against Austria. He has blown past that with 21 goals after scoring eight in the first five matches of the tournament. He now has 21, but Kylian Mbappe is nipping at his heels with 19, and could take the outright lead with a hat trick tonight.

Golden Boot race

Let's have a look at the Golden Boot race after the round of 16. Messi leads all scorers with 8 goals while Mbappe and Haaland are right on his heels with 7, and Harry Kane has 6. It’s a dream race for the Golden Boot, with all of the top scorers still alive in the final eight.

African countries best shot in the World Cup

Morocco set the record for the best finish for an African country in the World Cup four years ago in Qatar. They finished fourth after losing to Croatia in the third place game, and now here they are back in the quarters again. Cameroon, Senegal and Ghana have all been to the quarters, but Morocco have a chance to become the first African side to make it to the final if they can win their next two games.

Last World Cup match between two sides

It was the semifinal of the World Cup in Qatar, and Morocco made a historic run to the quarters, beating Spain and then Portugal before meeting France in the semis. The French got off to a flying start with a fifth minute goal from Theo Hernandez but the match was tight throughout. Morocco battled and had their chances to equalize, but Randal Kolo Muani scored the second just a minute after coming on as a substitute to advance to the final and send Morocco home after a historic World Cup.

World Cup history: Morocco

It's a country that had only been past the group stages once before Qatar, four years ago. In four appearances before the 2018 World Cup, they had seen the knockout round just once. In 2018 they returned to the biggest stage, and were knocked out in the group stages again, but that would be the last time that people overlooked Morocco. They made it all the way to the semis last World Cup before eventually losing to France. Now here they are back in the quarters for a second straight World Cup, and this is starting to be the norm for this humble African country.

World Cup history: France

For the last three decade, France have been the reference for International soccer. Before the 1998 World Cup which was hosted in France, this team had never made it to a final. Since then they have made four in their last seven appearances, and looking to make it five in eight. They won their first won in 1998, made it back to the final in 2006 when they lost to Italy. Then they won it all in Russia back in 2018 and were back in the final against Argentina in Qatar four years ago.

Injury report: France

For France Aurelien Tchouameni is listed as questionable with a thigh injury. He was kept on the bench for the match against Paraguay, but he has played 90 minutes in three of the five matches for France. They won't want to risk him today, but if he can play, the Real Madrid man would be a valuable boost in the midfield for Les Bleus.

Injury report: Morocco

While Morocco still has plenty of star power in their squad, they could certainly use the likes of Abde Ezzalzouli who is one of Morocco's most dynamic players. He missed the entire tournament after suffering a knee injury just before the opening match. Ismael Saibari is also out today after suffering an injury against Canada. The Bayern Munich man is the top scorer with three goals after scoring in each of the group stage matches. Morocco are going to have to find some inspiration from somewhere else with these two mega stars on the bench.

Star watch: France

Where in the world do we start with the “Star Watch” portion of the preview for France? They have so much attacking power up top, that Didier Deschamps has to keep some world class players on the bench with only four positions available for his five, or six attacking players. Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele are staples in the XI, and so is Michael Olise who may not have scored yet but he has five assists which puts him at the top of the assist list in this tournament.

Star watch: Morocco

This a star studded Morocco side with recognizable faces and names that play all over Europe on some of the best clubs in the world. Archaf Hakimi is probably the most famous Morocco player after winning back to back Champions League, but this team wouldn't be anywhere without Brahim Diaz. The Real Madrid man had a choice between Spain and Morocco and chose Spain, and the African nation has been in unprecedented territory ever since. He has four assists in the four matches during this tournament, accounting for almost half of the 10 goals Morocco have scored. When ever he has the ball at his feet his is a threat to the opponents defense.

How they got here: Morocco

Morocco didn't have the easiest path to the quarterfinals. Their group had Brazil, Scotland and Haiti, and it wasn’t until the last group stage match in which Morocco started to look like Morocco. They drew 1-1 against Brazil to open their campaign. Then squeaked by Scotland 1-0 in their second match before beating Haiti 4-2 in the first group match. They drew a tough Netherlands side in a round of 32 match that went to penalties, and barley snuck past them before beating Canada in what looked like their most comfortable match of the tournament.

How they got here: France

Before their round of 16 game, France was breezing through their competition. Their group consisted of Senegal, Iraq and Norway and they scored three or more goals in each of those three group stage games. They started with a 3-1 win over Senegal, and then a 3-0 win over Iraq before blowing out fellow quarterfinalists, Norway 4-1 in the final group stage match. Another easy win over Sweden in the round of 32 set them up with their toughest game against Paraguay.

Last game: France

France had their toughest game of the tournament on the round of 16. On paper it should have been an easy match for the Didier Deschamps side, but Paraguay fought until the bitter end against one of the best sides in the world, if not the best side. Desire Doue had the game changing play, drawing a penalty and sending Kylian Mbappe to the spot where he scored the one of only goal of the game. It was strange to see France struggle so much, but they survived their toughest test so far.

Last game: Morocco

After going to penalties in the round of 32, Morocco looked like they might be going to another extra time session after a scoreless first half against Canada. Something must have light a fire under this squad in the halftime break, because they scored three second half goals to blow past the co-hosts. Azzedine Ounahi scored the first goal five minutes after the break. It was still tight until the final 10 minutes, but Ounahi got his brace in the 82nd to bury the Canadians and Soufiane Rahimi added one more for good measure in the 8th minute of stoppage time.
