Cowboys at Giants: LIVE

Cowboys pull off NFC win: Gameday Summary

The Dallas Cowboys defeated division rivals New York Giants 23-16 on Monday night.

The first half of the game was dominated by the defenses. On the Giants first drive, they attempted a field goal, but it was blocked by the Dallas defense. Dallas came back and got a field goal of their own. That went back and forth for a while, the first half ending with Dallas in the lead 6-3.

In the second half, the Giants got the fist touchdown of the night on a 36-yard run by RB Saquon Barkley. That put NY in the lead 13-6. The Cowboys wasted no time responding. They came right back down the field for a touchdown of their own, a 1-yard run into the end zone by RB Ezekiel Elliott to tie up the game again before the end of the 3rd quarter.

In the 4th quarter, WR1 CeeDee Lamb made a one-handed grab in the end zone to give the Cowboys another TD and the lead with 8:30 left. The TD was set up after coach Mike McCarthy took the risk and went for it on 4th and 4. After that play, Rush threw to Lamb just at the sticks for the 1st down and then hit TE Hendershot for another 10-yard gain before Lamb got the impressive grab in the endzone to put the Cowboys up 20-13.

The defense held off the Giants again and on the next drive, KaVontae Turpin took back the return 28 yards, stopped just barely before escaping and taking it all the way in. That set up the Cowboys for another Brett Maher 44-yard field goal to give Dallas a 23-13 lead.

The Giants kicker Gano was able to get one more field goal, but that's it. They had a chance to get another score, but Jones threw a pass that was intercepted by Trevon Diggs to give Dallas the ball back with under two minutes. Cowboys beat the Giants 23-16.

All this was done with the Cowboys backup quarterback Cooper Rush filling in for Dak Prescott. Rush threw for 210 yards and the two touchdown passes in the win over the Giants.

The Cowboys defense had themselves a day too, with five sacks on Daniel Jones, three of which were handed out by DeMarcus Lawrence. This is the third game in a row that the Dallas defense only allowed one touchdown to their opponent.

Cox, Tolbert, and Peters to make season debut with Cowboys

Rookie wide receiver and third-round pick Jalen Tolbert will make his NFL debut tonight against the Giants. Though he's been healthy, he's been inactive over the first two weeks.

Linebacker Jabril Cox who's been out with a knee injury will make his season debut tonight as well and will replace LB Luke Gifford, who is now dealing with a hamstring issue.

Offensive lineman Jason Peters, who the Cowboys signed late in the preseason after losing OT Tyron Smith to injury, will also make his first appearance for the team after sitting out the first two weeks while practicing and getting caught up with the team. He could switch with Matt Farniok at left guard.

as.com

Giants already dominant defense just got a boost

With edge rushers Kayvon Thibodeaux and Azeez Ojulari making their NFL debuts tonight, the Cowboys offense has their work cut out for them.

The Giants' new defensive coordinator Don Martindale has so far done a great job with the NY D. They have allowed just 18 points per game over the last two weeks and that was without said edge rushers. So far, they only have three sacks on the season, but that's expected to change with the addition of the duo of rookie first-round pick Thibodeaux and Ojulari. Ojulari led the Giants in sacks in his rookie season last year with eight total.

Cowboys vs Giants: a long-time rivalry

The Cowboys and Giants have been rivals for a long time and a primetime game between them is no small deal.

The Cowboys have won nine of the last ten meetings between the two teams. Last season, Dallas won both meetings with the Giants, a 44-2- win at home and a 21-6 victory in New York.

The Giants are going into this game undefeated, with a 2-0 start to the season for the just the first time in six years. They squeaked out a road win against the Titans in Tennessee by just a point in Week 1 and then beat the Panthers at home by 3 points. Quarterback Daniel Jones completed 22 of 34 passes for 176 yards and a TD in the victory over Carolina. Their defense helped them out a lot, holding Baker Mayfield to just 145 yards. If they beat the Cowboys, it would be their first 3-0 start since 2009.

The Cowboys are going into the game 1-1, having lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in ugly fashion in the season opener before shocking everyone with an upset over the Cincinnati Bengals the next week. Backup QB Rush led that game with one TD pass and no turnovers and only one sack. But it was the Dallas defense that really made that win possible, sacking Joe Burrow six times.

"These divisional games, you understand the rivalry and the tradition of these games." Giants QB Daniel Jones said. "Especially in the NFC East, where these franchises have played each other for a long time and there's a lot of historic battles back and forth. It's fun to be part of that. Divisional games mean a little bit more in terms of getting a win. So, we're trying to do the best we can to prepare and play our best ball Monday night."

The Giants will be without three defensive backs, but have some good news, too. After missing the first two weeks with an MCL injury, Giants first-round draft pick Kayvon Thibodeaux will make his NFL debut along with fellow edge rusher Azeez Ojulari tonight against the Cowboys.

Can Cooper Rush take the Cowboys to another victory?

The Cowboys are without their starting quarterback Dak Prescott for a while after he broke his thumb in the season opener. That was a big concern for the already-struggling Dallas offense, and yet, in Week 2, backup QB Cooper Rush took the Cowboys to victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, saving the season from at least certain doom.

This week will be a new challenge for Rush, though. It's a prime time game on the road against a big rival. For the third week in a row, the Cowboys are also without their WR1, Michael Gallup, which leaves Rush to work with receivers CeeDee Lamb and Noah Brown. Those two plus RB Tony Pollard were the main stars of the show in Dallas' Week 2 win. Can they do it again?
