Davante Adams says this NBA star could’ve been one of the best in the NFL: “No question”
The four-time NBA champion was once offered a shot in the NFL, and some think he could’ve dominated.
He may be the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, but if Davante Adams is right, he missed out on a whole different kind of greatness... on a much bigger playing surface.
The NBA star that could have succeeded in NFL
Adams, the star wide receiver for the Los Angeles Raiders, wasn’t shy when asked on The Dan Patrick Show what kind of football player LeBron James could have been.
“He would’ve been one of the best wide receivers or tight ends of all time, no question,” Adams said. “He can fly, too. I’ve never seen somebody cover space that way on a basketball court.”
Did LeBron play football?
James, who stands 6-foot-9 and 250 pounds, already had the frame to line up at tight end or out wide. And in high school, he did just that. Playing for St. Vincent-St. Mary in Akron, Ohio, LeBron was a two-time All-Ohio selection at wide receiver. In just his junior year, he racked up 57 catches for 1,160 yards and 16 touchdowns. Scouts were interested. So were NFL teams.
During the 2011 NBA lockout, the Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks both offered LeBron a tryout. Some would say his decision to pass on that move was a good one given what has happened on the court since.
Former teammates, coaches, and now one of the NFL’s elite catchers all agree: LeBron James had NFL-level talent. And maybe, just maybe, the league lost out on one of the most unstoppable red zone threats it never got to see.
Still, four NBA titles and 20-plus years of domination isn’t a bad consolation for him.
