On Monday, the brother of retired NFL player Aqib Talib turned himself in to authorities after police identified him as a suspect in the shooting death of a youth football coach in Texas.

According to Dallas police, Yaqub Salik Talib was suspected in the shooting that killed a man Saturday night. Family and friends identified that the person killed was coach Mike Hickmon, who started the dispute when he went to pick up a football before someone kicked it away.

Yaqub Talib’s attorney, Clark Birdsall, told The Associated Press that his client “regrets the tragic loss of life but self-surrendered this morning so that he may have the chance to say his side of the story.” Birdsall would not elaborate on Talib’s side of the story.

Yaqub Talib surrenders

The attorney of Aqib Talib- Yaqub Talib’s brother- told TMZ that “Aqib was present when this unfortunate incident occurred and is very distraught and devastated over this terrible loss of life. He would like to convey his condolences to the family of the victim and to everyone who witnessed this unfortunate tragedy.”

Yaqub Talib was a five-time Pro Bowler who retired in 2020. Aqib became a contributor for Prime Video’s “Thursday Night Football” last month.

Dallas TV station WFAA reported that the Talib brothers are coaches for a youth football team, the North Dallas United Bobcats.

The youth team’s president Mike Freeman said he didn’t know how to explain what happened to the kids. “That’s the part that I’m stuck on right now. How do I explain it to them? Why?” Freeman said. “This is something that these kids will remember for the rest of their life.”
