Update:

It seems unlikely that an NFL coach and a soccer coach would form a deep bond, but that’s exactly what happened with Sean McVay and Mikel Arteta.

They operate in completely different worlds. One leads the Los Angeles Rams on Sundays in the NFL. The other commands Arsenal in the high-pressure grind of the Premier League.

But behind the scenes, McVay and Arteta have built one of the most fascinating cross-sport relationships in modern coaching, one that is shaping success on both sides of the Atlantic.

A conversation that sparked a turnaround

In November 2024, during a difficult stretch for the Rams, Arteta visited the team’s facility in Los Angeles. McVay’s team had just suffered a tough loss, and their playoff hopes were fading.

What followed was a two-hour conversation that would resonate far beyond that day. The two coaches discussed leadership, player relationships, and how to navigate adversity, topics that transcend sport. According to Rams president Kevin Demoff, the conversation helped McVay zoom out from the immediate frustration and reconnect with a bigger-picture mindset.

The impact was immediate. The Rams went on a surge, winning six of their next seven games and ultimately capturing their division title. It wasn’t a tactical adjustment, but a mental reset.

Why McVay and Arteta clicked

The connection between McVay and Arteta makes more sense when you look closer. Both were considered unusually young when they landed their first major managerial roles - McVay at 30, Arteta at 37. Both were tasked with rebuilding projects under intense scrutiny. And both share a relentless curiosity about leadership. That curiosity is what brought them together.

McVay has openly studied Arteta’s approach to man-management, particularly how he handled difficult situations within the squad. Arteta, meanwhile, has taken inspiration from the NFL environment, especially in areas like performance tracking, training structure, and communication systems.

“It’s not only about the sport,” Arteta has said. “It’s about the culture, about managing.”

The Kroenke connection

Their relationship is also a product of a larger ecosystem. Both the Rams and Arsenal are owned by Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, a global sports empire that has increasingly emphasized collaboration across its teams. Rather than operating in silos, KSE encourages its organizations to share ideas, resources, and even philosophies.

That approach has created unexpected crossover moments. The Rams adopted player tracking technology after seeing Arsenal use it. Arsenal embraced more extensive video analysis after visiting the Rams’ facilities. And staff across both organizations regularly exchange insights on performance and culture.

The results are hard to ignore. The Rams have remained competitive in the NFL, consistently evolving despite roster turnover. Arsenal, meanwhile, have re-emerged as a genuine title contender in England, powered by a young, dynamic squad.

While neither coach would credit the other for their success outright, there’s a shared philosophy that runs through both teams: Invest in young talent, build strong player relationships, and stay adaptable under pressure. Those principles are reinforced every time McVay and Arteta connect.

More than just football

Coaches often guard their ideas closely, especially at the professional level. But within the KSE network, there’s a level of openness that allows figures like McVay and Arteta to exchange thoughts without the usual competitive barriers.

That openness has created something rare, a genuine coaching dialogue across two entirely different sports. And as both the Rams and Arsenal continue to chase titles, that unlikely bond may remain one of their most underrated advantages.
