Update:

For much of the offseason, the fate of Aaron Rodgers was up in the air. Now signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, there are still plenty of questions surrounding the 41-year-old NFL veteran.

Rodgers will almost certainly begin the 2025 season as the starting quarterback for the Steelers and he joins a team in need of direction. Pittsburgh has started each of the past four seasons with a different No. 1 QB and Rodgers is tasked with providing the offensive trigger to go with one of the league’s best defenses.

However the Steelers will try to avoid relying too heavily on Rodgers’ incredible throwing abilities, at least through the first part of the season. Former head coach Bill Cowher spent 15 seasons in charge of the Steelers and he explained recently that he would try to ease the burden on the new play-caller.

Cowher said: “I think Aaron’s at a point where he knows you don’t want him to be throwing the ball 40 times a game at this point. You want Aaron Rodgers to be healthy going into the playoffs, and hopefully you get to the playoffs. I think in the meantime you create a balance on your football team that you’re not just relying on his arm throughout the course of four quarters.”

Of course, that does not mean that Rodgers will be denied the chance to make plays in Pittsburgh. The four-time NFL MVP is an incredible passer and ranks top of the NFL’s all-time regular season passing rating list.

He holds the league’s single-season passing rating record (122.5) and the Steelers will be hoping that the last drops of that incredible star power can help transform a misfiring team into championship contenders.

Cowher explained: “Listen, you can turn the ball over to him at the end of a half, at the end of a game and know he’s been there before and I think he will operate that very, very efficiently. Again, I think it’s going to be a matter of getting comfortable in this system with the players he has around him.”

The Steelers begin the 2025 regular season on familiar turf for Rodgers. He will start the year with a return to MetLife Stadium to face the New York Jets, the team that he left after a bleak 2024 showing. If this is to be his final season, he would love to start it in style.
